Grafton, Wisconsin is a small town in the edge of the state of Wisconsin. It is located about 25 miles northeast of Milwaukee and 50 miles southwest of Green Bay. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Grafton is part of the Green Bay metropolitan area. The Town of Grafton was organized on December 12, 1854, from land that had been donated by John Dibble and others in what is now the city of Milwaukee. The town was named for General George Washington Grafton, who had fought in the American Revolution and served as a brigadier general in the War of 1812. Grafton's first store opened its doors on Main Street in 1855. In 1865, an addition to the original store building were two jail cells – one for male prisoners and one for female prisoners – which are still used today as part of Grafton Municipal Court House Annex Park. In 1907, when Grafton incorporated as a village, it became possible to build a school using funds raised from a sales tax increase authorized by Act 181of that year. That same year also saw construction begin on what would eventually become Grafton High School; oddly enough, it was not until 1915 that classes first began teaching inside what are now Administration Building and Classroom A (now known as Tower 2). On May 1st 1904 there was an Earthquake measuring 6 Richter intensity with epicenter located near La Crosse County line just west side ol Fond du Lac County line across River Ousefield Ferry some place between Manitowoc County line north side ol River Osage Ferry & Racine County Line south side ol Fond du Lac River Bridge over WI State Line occurred followed by minor shaking throughout Village green most everyone got out into Streets except Fire Dept which remained inside their Houses with very few exceptions all Schools closed early due to this earthquake including our own high school!
