Grafton, Wisconsin is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. Grafton is located in the Driftless Area of north-central Wisconsin and it is bordered by the towns of Beloit and Waukesha to the south, La Crosse to the east, and Sheboygan to the north. According to the United States Census Bureau, Grafton has a total area of , all land. The first Europeans to visit Grafton were French traders on their way from La Nouvelle France downriver in 1636. AO1 found Potawatomi villages near present-day Grafton but no evidence that they had known about or exploited any resources hereabouts until after 1713 when German fur traders began exploring this region for trade with what they thought was an inland Native American people called "The Ojibwe." In 1736 Pierre Chouteau discovered rich iron ore deposits near present day Grafton while exploring for new land grants in what is now Door County; he named his discovery “Chouteaus Iron Mines” after him and built a mill there around 1740. In 1835 Chouteau sold his interest in “Chouteaus Iron Mines” to John George Hegarty who renamed it “Grafton” after his family home near Sligo – about two miles west of modern-day Grafton on Highway 612 (now Old Rte 612). By 1855 over one thousand people lived in Grafton with a post office established there on November 15th, 1855 under the name of Eau Claire; it closed on December 12th due to low mail traffic and reopened as Rock Falls on January 2nd following a campaign by local businessmen led by David Borenman which raised $3,000 cash from citizens within three months. John J Pershing and Lt. Col. Lewis Bitton Jr.. After World War I ended, many businesses closed down or merged into larger ones; however, Elijah Ladd's store still remains open today as an antique/junk store called "The Lion's Den". The town has seen other changes over time including growing numbers of immigrants arriving during the late 1800s and early 1900s; however, it has always been known for its bipartisan politics and community spirit which has helped it stay afloat through tough times such as natural disasters like floods or fires. Recently, Grafton has made strides with new technology such as becoming home to their own high school (Grafton-Oshkosh High School) which opened in September 2009 after years of planning and fundraising efforts by local residents and businesses alike!
The first permanent settler in Grafton was John F. Smith who arrived in 1836. Grafton became a town on February 24, 1847 when the first post office was established. The town name is derived from the French word "graft" meaning to cut or chop something.
