Grafton is a town in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in La Crosse County. Grafton is located on the banks of the Fox River and north of Milwaukee. The first targets were hung from trees in Grafton by members of the local militia during the American Revolution. A shooting range was built near what is now Grafton High School in 1875 to allow residents to shoot at small game that was being hunted in the area. In 1903, a group of businessmen donated land for a rifle range and training school which became known as "Grafton Arsenal." The arsenal produced rifles for U.S., Canadian, and Mexican armies during World War I and World War II. In 1956, Shooting Star Ammunition Corporation opened a factory to produce target ammo for pistols and shotguns in Grafton. The plant closed in 1978 but left behind extensive evidence of its production including tooling marks on projectiles, firing equipment, test fire records, memorabilia pieces such as cases with ammunition still inside them... Today there are few if any active firearms ranges remaining within town limits; however there are numerous gun clubs that meet monthly or more frequently around town - many without boundaries outside of town! Gun shooting has been an integral part of community life here since before these ranges even began operating!

Grafton grew rapidly and in 1847 became the seat of government for Racine County. In 1861, Grafton became the capital of Wisconsin Territory. During World War I, Grafton played a significant role as a military base and munitions production center. After the war, the town experienced rapid growth and development, becoming one of the most important cultural and economic centers in central Wisconsin.
