In 1976, Grafton became a city when it ratified an amendment to its charter which granted city status to all unincorporated areas within its boundaries which had annexed themselves since 1976 or earlier without having obtained city approval. In 2006, Grafton celebrated its 375th anniversary with a large celebration that included outdoor concerts by local bandshells and fireworks displays over the riverfront park near downtown

The first settlers in Grafton were the Johnnys and their families who arrived in 1846 from Canada. The town was named for General Joseph Grafton, an American general during World War I who served as commander of the US First Army Corps. On July 15, 1853, an act of Congress approved the organization of Dodge County and its seat was located at Grafton. On November 3, 1855, a new courthouse was built at what is now downtown Grafton. In 1870, a railroad depot was built on the east side of town and it became known as "Grafton Station". A post office called Grafton opened on December 2, 1870; it changed its name to Dodgeville on October 26th of that year.
