Grafton, Wisconsin is a town in the town of Calumet and the county seat of Polk County,Wisconsin. The population was 9,728 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Polk County by land area. Grafton was founded on November 3, 1879 by immigrants from Ireland. The first post office in Grafton opened on January 1, 1880. The name comes from "graf" meaning 'bridge' and "thone" meaning 'seat'. The beginnings of Grafton date back to 1847 when two groups of Irish emigrants crossed the state line into Manitoba Territory and set up a trading post called Rathdowney near present day Waukesha. The post office at Rathdowney operated for six weeks before being closed due to lack of customers or mail service between Milwaukee and Prairie du Chien. A group of men from Dublin who had been working in Waukesha decided to take their chances in what seemed like an unknown territory and set up a small settlement northwest of present day Grafton on April 6, 1847 named after General James Kempt (1784-1857) who had fought with Quesnay against Napoleonic forces during the Seven Years' War. On November 3rd, 1879, five young men from Ireland arrived in Calumet County aboard the steamer "Belle Isle". They were deputed by their leader - Patrick Healy (1814-1900) - to find a home for themselves and begin building their new society which would later become known as Healy's Grain Elevator Company Limited. With only $8 worth of potatoes per person they started out with 50 shares each but quickly grew into 100 shares each! This early success led to them opening their own storefront on North Main Street where they continued to sell potatoes until 1903 when they moved across I-94 to become one of the first grocery stores in downtown Grafton! They were finally forced out of business around 1930 when big box stores began coming along and competitive pricing caused them to go out of business too! In fact throughout all these years they never lost touch with their roots...they continue farming produce today!
Grafton, Wisconsin was founded in 1854 by John C. Grafton and his wife Anna. The town was named for General George B. McClellan, who helped lead the Union army during the American Civil War. Grafton grew rapidly due to its location on the Wabash River, and in 1872 it became a city. In 1908, Grafton hosted the first international exposition of agriculture and trade at the local fairgrounds.
