The village was founded in 1854 by John Grafton and his wife Lucretia Morse Grafton. The first post office was established in 1855. Grafton is named after General James K. Polk who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President from 1868 to 1872. The community has a rich history dating back to its earliest days when settlers arrived on the banks of the Racine River in what is now Grafton County (then called Winnebago County). In 1854, John Grafton founded a small village on land he had purchased from the Potawatomi tribe east of present-day Milwaukee with his wife Lucretia Morse Grafton as its first resident official.Grafton named his new community after General James K . In 1896, grocers business moved out of town towards Decatur because that was then becoming an center for easternWisconsin grocery industry—the last time this would happen until Grocery Outlet stores opened up all over America during World War II]. For many years following World War II,Grafton saw sporadic growth as various factories closed down around Green Bay but finally experienced significant growth due to suburban development along Interstate 94 which reached Swift Currentin 1990]. At present there are only a few businesses remaining within walking distance of downtown including locally owned restaurants, studios and bars.} Today’s downtown core contains several art galleries, two universities (University of Wisconsin–Green Bay and University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee), several high-end shopping malls (including Kohl’s), two large theaters/movies complexes (Crestwood Place mall and FirstMerit Center), three large parks (Lake Michigan Park, Greenwood Park and Racine Park) as well as numerous smaller parks dotting girders throughout downtown streetscape} Formerly one major transportation interchange for southeastern Wisconsin counties lying just outside Green Bay proper lay rural areas surrounding railroad tracks running north/south through central Grafton Village before terminating near Waukesha County line just west of Prairie du Chien } Today much rural acreage surrounding railroad tracks remains undeveloped although there are plans underway for residential development within 1 mile or so radius} Census data released in 2016 showed that while median household income has remained largely stagnant since 2000 it has seen some modest increases among certain racial/ethnic groups such as African Americans living relatively close to white households but also growing “underprivileged” Hispanic populations]} " The cityscape today can be described with two main neighborhoods: Downtown & Southside.} From downtown you can walk out into SOUTHSIDE which consists mostly of single family homes built between 1940-1960 preoccupied with agriculture or homebuilders; these homes have characteristically wide expanses lawns still green even though most were planted with soybean or corn; they look like picturesque farms straight outta Saturday morning cartoons}, close by are rows upon rows OF multiunit dwellings built since 1960 primarily for people working southward off I-94 into Dane County}; these dwellings look more like rundown apartment buildings than anything else}} Euclid Avenue runs perpendicular across both neighborhoods thenceforthknown simply as "Downtown".Within 1 block southwest corner Euclid Ave turns onto Noyes Street known affectionately locally simply "Noyes Alley"} Developing eastward from Noye's Alley are dense stands of RESIDENTS housing developments erected since early 2000 especially catering to those working northeast off I-94 into AshwaubenON}; these developments generally sport sleek facades designed by local architecture firms}; however once you get closer you will see lots unmarked buildouts financed by railroads located behind doors directly opposite freeway entrances})

Grafton, Wisconsin was once a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin that is now part of the nearby city of Green Bay. Grafton was first settled by German and Norwegian immigrants in 1836. The community originated from a farmstead which was destroyed by a fire in 1837, and it became known as "The Village". In 1846, Grafton became the seat of government for Racine County and was renamed after General George Washington's home state, Virginia. The population of Grafton peaked at 2,500 in 1880 but declined to 1,000 by 1920 due to various factors includingWorld War I and Prohibition. However, the population has since increased again due to new development in the area such as manufacturing and agriculture. Despite its decline during the Great Depression, Grafton experienced some growth during World War II due to wartime efforts such as manufacturing military equipment and ammunition. In 1945, Grafton merged with neighboring White Settlement to form Green Bay-Grafton Township. However, this merger did not result in any significant changes until 1959 when Green Bay-Grafton Township reorganized itself into four wards (the same number as there are cities/towns within it). This change allowed for more direct representation of residents on local committees which led to an increase in civic activity throughout the township. In 1970, Grafton made history when it became one of only two municipalities in Wisconsin to be added to the National Register of Historic Places following approval from its citizens via referendum. The municipality has also been awarded numerous other awards including being selected as one of America's "Best Places To Live" by Forbes Magazine in 2006 and being included on Bloomberg Businessweek's " Best Cities for Work" list for 2010-2011
