Grafton is a town in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. Grafton is the smallest of the five towns in Waukesha County and the only one not on the Milwaukee–Waukesha Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Grafton was Nicholas Hennepin in 1837. In 1846, John Fenton platted what is now Grafton and named it after his brother-in-law General James Ketchum. The village of Grafton started to form around this time and by 1853 it had a post office and two stores. On February 14, 1865, Grafton became part of the new Waukesha County when it was organized from portions of neighboring Racine and Kenosha counties. In 1903, builder George Fitzgerald added a modern garage to his home on Sixty-fifth Street which served as headquarters for Fitzgerald's Garage Company until 1934 when that company merged into Dodge Brothers Chevrolet Corporation. That company's building still stands today on Main Street across from Fitzgerald Park (now known as Walgreen's Park). This building also housed the old library before that moved to its current location downtown in 2006. In 1890s there were ten churches in Grafton with Revs John Lusk (1829-1902), Isaac Haasauer (1839-1920), Augustus Herron (1845-1927) being most prominent among them all. Of note are three maple trees located just off Ulysses Road leading up to First Methodist Church: these tree roots have continued to grow even after more than 100 years since their planting according to Garth Eikenberry who wrote about them for "Wisconsin History" magazine in 1984 In 1911 an act was passed by Congress authoring creation of municipal government within Waukesha County specifically for the town of Grafton This legislation provided for Village Board members elected directly by residents rather than via electioneering or appointment The firstVillage Board meeting was held on October 24th The first administrator locally appointed was Jno Cramer who ran unopposed On November 1st 1917 Jasmine Neely became Administrator
Grafton, Wisconsin was first settled in 1837. The town was named after General James Grafton, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established in Grafton in 1839. In 1861, Grafton became the capital of the newly created Dakota Territory.
