Grafton, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin that was founded in 1836. It is located on the north side of the Fox River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Milwaukee and 30 miles (48 km) west of Waukesha. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Grafton is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. The first person to settled in Grafton was John Fitch who arrived in 1836 and built a log cabin on what is now Market Street. By 1845, four other settlers had joined Fitch and began to build houses around their cabin. In 1846, John Pemberton bought land from Fitch and began to grow crops there. He named his farm Grafton after George Washington Pemberton, one of his friends from college days atobasee academy where he also graduated in 1835). The first store opened in Grafton in 1850 by Samuel Hanks who owned a grocery business near downtown Waukesha. A post office was started at Grafton in 1861 and remained open until it closed in 1968. In 1862, Colonel Abraham Lincoln came through this area while campaigning for election as president; he stopped at Hanks' store on his way southward after stopping at Ripley's Falls on his way back upriver from New York City during the American Civil War era journey across America known as the Great Lakes legation tour which spanned most of July 1861- November 1865 including stops at Green Bay, Manitowoc and Eau Claire; Hanks gave him a ride into town to buy some groceries before continuing on his business trip downstream from there to rural Milwaukie County just outside Madison where he later died suddenly leaving an estate valued between $2 million-$4 million dollars including real estate holdings scattered throughout several states along with over sixty slaves - all factors that led scholars such as Timothy Snyder to argue that “the purchase document establishes Lincoln’s ownership not onlyof these resources but also their use within Abe’s nascent presidential household” (Snyder 2011: xxvi).
