The village of Grafton, Wisconsin was established in 1847 and had a population of around 100 people. In the early 1800s, Grafton was part of the Menominee Indian Nation. The first white man to settle in the area was Nicholas Webster who arrived in 1824. He built a cabin on what is now North Third Street. In 1827, Webster married Sarah Ayer and they started to farm around this area. By 1830, they had four children and started to sell grain at local markets. They also built a house on East Main Street which stayed in use until 1907. In 1840, Nicholas Webster bought land east of present day Center Road and began farming there too. By 1850, he had five children and his wife Sarah had married John Davenport from Onalaska County. In 1861, Davenport purchased some additional land east of Center Road from Nicholas Webster and founded the town of Grafton which included parts of what is today Grafton Village, North Third Street, South Fourth Street, East Main Street and much of what is today West Side Drive. The first school in Grafton was built in 1865 by Reverend Wm Hinson with funds provided by Nicholas Webster Sr.. It became known as the Nicholson School after him. Grafton is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2010 census, its population was 7,811. The original ford on the Fox River was founded by John Greenough and other early settlers in 1836. The town took its name from Grafton County, Illinois, which was within his old district. Grafton has been located on a bend of the Fox River since 1837 and first had a post office there in 1840. It became a city in 1959 and has since grown to become one of the largest cities in Wisconsin with over 60,000 residents as of 2016. The economy of Grafton is based largely on agriculture, with some small businesses also active in manufacturing and services sectors such as banking and education. There are several high-tech companies operating throughout the area including two software companies that have their headquarters here as well as three pharmaceuticals manufactures/distributors (Allergan, Novartis Pharmaceuticals USA and Roche). Additionally, there is significant retail presence with several large anchors like Sears Holdings being present along with smaller chains like JCPenney and Kohl’s department stores.. In addition to its role as an important commercial center for southwestern Wisconsin, Grafton is also known for its annual Apple Festival which takes place downtown during apple week each year; this event features music concerts, demonstrations about apple production methods (including making apples by hand), food concessions from local restaurants., fairgrounds housing exhibits about local history or products related to Apple Inc., and more generally an open-air market featuring unique items from around Midwest United States
