Grafton, Wisconsin is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,957 at the 2000 census. The name of the town reflects its location on the Grafton River. Grafton was platted in 1836 by Major James Grafton and his wife Esther Maynard. It was named for General John A. Garrettson who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as Indian commissioner in Dakota Territory from 1855 to 1856. The first settler in Grafton was Joseph Ritchie who arrived in 1838 and built a cabin on the banks of the Grafton River. He later moved to what is now West Allis and established a farm there before moving to Grafton in 1840. A post office called Grafton was established at this location on December 24, 1841, with Arent Hutton as the first mail carrier. The name change came about because of an election won by John Muhlenberg over incumbent Isaac Brockman that year. Hutton had run under the slogan "Graftony for all." In 1865, Burlington Railroad began service through Graftton and renamed it Burlington Station after its parent company Burlington Railway Company (later Conrail). In 1870, another railroad company bought Burlington Station and changed its name to Burlington Depot after merging with Chicago & Northwestern Railway Company (later CSX Transportation). In 1893–1894, during construction of Union Pacific Railroad's main line from Milwaukee to Omaha through eastern Nebraska and western Kansas, local farmers donated 47 acres (190 m2) of land at what is now North High School for education purposes only; construction never proceeded because of financial difficulties caused by recession at that time. However, parts of these lands were developed into North High School Park which still occupies that parcel today. In 1907–1908 much development took place around what are now downtown Graftton when Illinois Central Railroad added tracks westward from Waukesha Junction connecting with their Chicago Main Line southwest of this town center; this also created dense urban growth around what are now I-90 southbound exit 10A/Upper State Street eastbound intersection just north of downtown; however no mention is made anywhere about developing or using part or all of this developmentally valuable land near where North High School once sat until it too became vacant due to redevelopment efforts some years later! Today remnants can be seen from Highway 43 northwest out towards Waukesha Falls while down Interstate 90 one may see small bits leftover along Lower State Street running east-west just northeast of downtown between ramps leading back onto I-90
