The death of President Ulysses S Grant led to a decline in business activity around 1880; however, by 1890glenora had recovered enough to boast two stores, one restaurant and two schools which were run by private individuals as well as government funding for infrastructure improvements like sidewalks and drains. In 1897 local entrepreneur Edwin Grossman organized what would be known as "the great Milwaukee strike". Atop their demand for better wages for workers at local mines saw heavy picketing across the county with some locals even burning down businesses during what became known as "the Great Lakes Strike". After five days of failed negotiations most strikers were 3 miles within sight or experience of Local 815 headquarters before being force marched back to their respective mine sites with no negotiation or concession offered by management other than an offer to send them all back home if they did not return within 24 hours without any further communication from management then those conditions would be considered lockout status effective immediately! This effectively ended all control over working conditions at many local mines throughout the county during this time period leading up to more organized industrial action starting up again about ten years later when these same demands finally got met without much flared animosity or violence thanks largely to state regulation that made work places more competitive through closed shop laws
