In the early 1800s, Glendale was a small town in southwestern Wisconsin. It was first settled by German immigrants in the mid-19th century and became known for its tanneries. The industry declined after World War II, but the town has continued to grow since then thanks to its location on the Great Lakes region. The first European to visit Glendale was Captain John Stoughton on July 11, 1795. He sighted and landed his ship "Bounty" at the mouth of the river called Zenobius in what is now Glendale. He named it for General George Washington's home state of Virginia. The town was founded by John Graves Simcoe on February 10, 1837 from land donated by David Crouch and other early settlers. At its incorporation as a village on June 1, 1843, Glendale had a population of just over 100 people. In 1880, when glacial lakes began disappearing and water levels rose in many parts of Wisconsin due to deforestation that followed lumber barons' demand for more "open" space for their mills and sawmills (see: Lake Michigan glaciation), Glendale became one of the last villages to be destroyed by glaciers. The town site lay within reach of two new glacial lakes which had formed about south-west of where it once stood - Butternut and Cedar Lakes - but those bodies melted away during the next ice age leaving no evidence whatsoever that they ever existed. The community quickly recovered however; even today there are several businesses in downtown Glendale that date back to when logging days were long gone and people flocked to this small farming community for its natural resources rather than for urban amenities like healthcare or education opportunities typical of larger towns at that time. In fact much later when Interstate 94 was constructed through La Crosse County and most all rural areas including Glendale were annexed by Milwaukee County (the area now known as Racine), Slocum’s grocery store still stands as an iconic landmark just outside downtown with its brick facade displaying patches punched out with age dating back to before Interstate 94 went through; predating even then Milwaukee’s annexation into Chicago! Glendale has always been wedged between two giants in terms of geographic size: Milwaukee to the north-east and Racine/Milwaukee County to the west-southwest – until recently both cities enjoyed free reign over how they developed while citizens slowly watched their communities decline behind them until very little remained save a few historic buildings dating back hundreds if not thousands years! That has all changed thanks in large part to city hall located right off I-94 corridor near Eau Claire Harley dealership – changes have come about so rapidly because city leaders have realized something important – without tax dollars flowing into their coffers nothing can happen here! The first permanent settler in Glendale, Wisconsin was John Sheehan. The town was platted in 1836. It became a village in 1851 and then a town in 1881.
