In the early 1800s, Glendale was a small town in southern Wisconsin. There were few opportunities for women to pursue careers outside of their homes, so many women worked as domestic servants or as prostitutes. Gun manufacturers soon became popular in this area because there was a lack of firearms regulation at the time. The first firearmsmanufacturing company in Glendale was established by Jacob Silliman in 1825. Silliman began manufacturing pistols and rifles for use by farmers and hunters in rural areas of Wisconsin. In 1845, Silliman founded the American Arms Manufacturing Company which became one of the largest gun companies in America. From its inception until 1865, American Arms Manufacturing Company produced over 1 million handguns and rifles. The company also manufactured cannons and artillery weapons during this time period. In 1865, American Arms Manufacturing Company merged with other companies to form the National Armory Corporation which remains one of the most successfulgun manufacturer today.
