Germantown is named after George Washington's plantation on the west side of the river. The first settler in what would become Germantown was James Kapp, who purchased land in 1786 from French Canadians for $1,000. The community was platted in 1836 by John Prentice and others as a village on the east side of the Waukesha River adjacent to present-day Racine. On July 1, 1837, it became a town when it incorporated as "Germantown" under Act No. 6 of 1837. In 1870, it passed an act annexing Winona (now Ozaukee) County and becoming part of that county's new city limits; however, its western boundary remained unchanged until 1898 when Act No. 9 of 1898 annexed most of Kenosha County to form Milwaukee proper with Germantown remaining as a rural township within that new municipality boundaries which remain today
