Germantown is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,691 at the 2010 census. Germantown is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was chartered in 1838 and named for General George Washington's headquarters on the West Side of Mount Pleasant near what is now downtown Germantown. Germantown began as a farming community with only a few homes and businesses, but by 1870 it had more than 100 residents and had developed into a busy commercial center with several stores, two banks, three churches, and four schools. In 1892, when the first electric streetcar line ran through Germantown, its citizens got involved in setting up power lines and lights throughout the town. By 1920 there were over 200 businesses in Germantown employing around 1,000 people; by 1940 that number had shrunk to just 50 due to heavy industry relocation out of the city during World War II. However, by 1960 GermantOWN again boasted over 200 businesses employing nearly 2000 people- making it one of the most active economic engines within its boundaries today! 2) One hundred years ago: At approximately 10:00 AEDT on July 4th1838 General George Washington set foot in what would become known as Germantown after his headquarters were moved from Mount Pleasant to this location during the American Revolution. This small agricultural community quickly grew into a bustling commercial center which employed many early settlers including John Snelling & family who founded Snelling Brewery which still stands today adjacent to modern day downtown Germantony 3) During prohibition days: In response to various moral turpitude among some in society caused by drinking alcohol being outlawed (this wasn't always an easy task), many farmers turned to growing illegal liquor providing their family's prosperity did not suffer greatly following prohibition however prices became extremely high resulting in much rural families moving away from this so called "happy land" 4) After repeal: For many years following repeal local government remained decentralized however with growth coming from retail/service sector jobs specifically within healthcare/hospitality; development trends slowly shifted towards central government control until recently constituents began seeking referendum representation via Town Board recommendations culminating with recent Town Board meetings which have seen major changes brought about pursuant thereto
