Germantown is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the border of Polk and Door Counties. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settlers in what is now Germantown arrived in 1836, when John Haines and his family founded the town of Hainesville on a small lot east of present-day Germantown on Bremen Road. Hainesville was renamed Germantown after General George Washington's home state, Virginia. In 1847, businessman Isaac Nolen established a store and tavern in what is now downtown Germantown with land he had purchased from Robert Treats; this became known as Nolen's Landing. In 1850, David Kessler opened an agricultural store and Creamery on Third Street between State and Ash Streets; this became known as Kessler's Corner (named for him). In 1861, construction began on the Milwaukee County Courthouse which would become one of the largest courthouse complexes in America. On July 1, 1871, the town was incorporated as a city with a population of 10,000 people; it grew rapidly due to its location just across the river from Milwaukee and its importance as an agricultural center for Midwest farmers working out their mortgages during the depression years (1890-1929). The city annexed adjacent townships in 1886: Winnebago Township to its north (Nolen's Landing lay within it), Waupun Township to its west (Kessler's Corner lay within it), Menomonee Falls Township to its south (the eastern portion of Waupun Township had been annexed by Milwaukee in 1885), Chippewa Falls Township to its east (Chippewa Falls lay within Menomonee Falls Township). On October 15, 1907 – two days after Chicago Cubs pitcher "Cy Young" set a then record by allowing only one run over eight innings pitched – Germantown residents raised money through carnival games at Second Avenue Station to build themselves a new ballpark they called Municipal Stadium/First Park which they used until 1915 when they switched to Union Park/Plymouth Stadium because that park was available for use by both teams while City Hall was being built across First Avenue from Municipal Stadium/First Park. After World War I ended – with many military veterans moving into industrial cities such as Milwaukee – much of Germantown remained rural until well into World War II when many families moved into West Allis or other areas closer to work opportunities during wartime shortages caused by post-war rationing regulations enforced by government authorities. Germantown is located in the town of Germantown, Wisconsin, on the east side of the River Menomonee. The village was founded in 1836 by Norwegian immigrants and became a incorporated town in 1854. The population of Germantown peaked at 1,000 in 1889 but has since declined to around 100 people. The Village of Germantown was platted by John Sibley and others in 1836. It was named for General George Washington's birthplace, Mount Vernon. When the first settlers arrived from Norway they were quite different from each other and there was no one specific language spoken within the village until after 1840 when Flemish settlers arrived. Early growth occurred due to lumbering, manufacturing and agricultural pursuits although some new construction took place such as a school building which served as a post office from 1846-1852. In 1854, the Town of Germantown merged with neighboring townships to form Jackson Township which still exists today as an independent municipality with a population of over 500 residents. In 1893, after years of decline due to changes brought about by industry and immigration (the largest group being German), Germantown reached its heyday with over 1,000 residents living in small housing developments scattered throughout downtown while also having two churches (St Mary's Cathedral and Christ Lutheran) along with several businesses including banks (the First National Bank) and grocery stores (the Mercers). However during this time period too much development occurred without any planning or neighborliness resulting in crowding problems that continue to this day; however with increased efforts entrepreneurship has started to take hold again albeit slowly. Despite these challenges early 20th century Germantown had many accomplishments including becoming a dry goods store district before it went out of business during World War II; hosting a Farmers' Market every Saturday morning for more than 50 years; becoming home to music festivals such as Mayflower Festivals multiple times each year; forming the United States Golf Association’s Midwest Section Business Division here in 1957 prior to their current location at Quicken Loans Arena; being designated “Neighborhood Watch District” by then Mayor Bob Kapp twice between 1978-1981 although little change happened thereafter until 2003 when city officials decided not to renew its designation due largely to increasing crime rates inner city areas which have continued unabated despite efforts by police chiefs throughout history
