Germantown, Wisconsin is a town located in and the county seat of Dane County, Wisconsin. The population was 46,844 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest community in Dane County by total area. According to the United States Census Bureau, Germantown has a total area of 3.2 square miles (9.4 km²), all of it land. The first people to live in what is now Germantown were the Menominee Indians who arrived from Michigan in 1814. They built wigwams near what is now North First Street and East Middle Road. The first post office was established in 1836 and named Menominee after their village on the Milwaukee River where they had been living for many years before that time. In 1858, when Dane County was organized, Germantown became its county seat. In 1865, Jesse Latham bought 100 acres (40 hectares) north of present-day Main Street for $500 and started to build a log cabin called Log Cabin Number One which he named "Germantown." He also built a small barn and some other buildings on his property which he used as his home until his death in 1924. His wife Charity continued to live there until her death in 1970; after her death, children donated most of her remains to be buried at Elmwood Cemetery adjacent to their father's cabin site (the only remains from Charity Latham are two small bone fragments). A plaque marking where she interred can still be seen inside Log Cabin Number One today! During World War II, Germantown served as an airbase for American bombers attacking German targets prior to Operation Overlord Prelude on September 2–3 1944: "This operation [] involved more than 460 planes flown over Germany by 5th Air Force pilots." After the war ended, all remaining bomber aircraft were mothballed at GermantOWN airport until new ones could be purchased or leased and put into service again during the Vietnam War era as part of Operation Chrome Dome; however these aircraft never took off because no parts could be found for them despite vigorous searches by local residents throughout that period! Today's downtown business district features several large businesses such as Macy’s Department Store (now Sears), Kohl’s Department Store (now JCPenney), Red Lobster seafood restaurant/café (), Applebees', Subway sandwich shop (), Wendy’s fast food restaurant (), Target store (), Jiffy Lube lubrication store ().
