Gun barrel history in Germantown, Wisconsin began with the first firearms made there in 1839. The area at the time was a land grant to Captain David W. Smith and his family. Captain Smith's home was located on the east side of town, just south of First Street. He owned a gunsmith shop and used his firearms to protect himself and his family from Indians in the area. 2nd Lt John C. Kapp of the 14th Infantry Regiment uses a Spencer rifle during an engagement against Sioux Indians near Fort Randall on December 1, 1846 In 1847, Captain Smith sold his interest in the gunsmith shop to Jno A. Weisenger who continued to make firearms there until 1872 when he moved upriver to Green Bay. There are references to guns being made here as early as 1792 when Nicholas Romanowsky built a cannon called "The invincible" here for use against French forces during the American Revolution 2nd Lt John C. Germantown, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the north-central border of the state. The population was 914 at the 2010 census and 1,543 at the 2013 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Germantown was founded in 1836 by German immigrants and has been called "the most assimilated city in America." The community began as a small farming village on a bend in Waukesha River near its present location. Businesses started up quickly to support the influx of Germans: sawmills, flour mills, cheese factories and other businesses took form over time to meet demand for goods from Germany and elsewhere. A school was first built in 1838, followed by a Baptist church two years later and then an Masonic Lodge in 1850. In 1854, when Waukesha County was organized, Germantown became its seat with land given to it by Governor John Kapp (1785-1862). Germantown's heyday came during World War II when it became one of the largest manufacturing centers in Wisconsin thanks to heavy industry including aircraft production at George Gwinnett's Gannett Aircraft plant; shipbuilding at First National Shipbuilding Corp.;auto production at Jiffy Lube Automotive; paper making from Hormel Paper Products; ice cream production from Oreo Cookies & Cones Ltd.;and fertilizer production from Monsanto Co.. However, following World War II there were declines in manufacturing activity as automation displaced many jobs; while auto production remains strong today as companies such as General Motors pursue global expansionism through new plants outside North America Today Germantown is an active community with numerous cultural events and activities ongoing throughout the year including various art galleries open to the public every day except Mondays which are dedicated to local business meetings or special events

Germantown is a small, unincorporated community located in the town of Germantown, Racine County, Wisconsin. The population was 1,043 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Germantown were French Canadians who arrived from Quebec in 1836. They built cabins on the banks of the Fox River and started a commercial fishing business. In 1839, they laid out a town square and named it Germantown after their home province of Canada. The first store opened in 1840 and by 1847 there were six businesses operating in downtown Germantown: bakery, apothecary, grocery store, livery stable, barbershop and doctor's office. In 1846, an act was passed allowing white men to buy property within the limits of Racine County for $5 per acre (the equivalent of $100 at that time). This led to construction of several homes near where later Germantown would be built. The first white settler was James Hargrave who bought land around present-day milepost 7 on October 20th, 1849. He named his new community Hargraveville after himself and his brother-in-law John Hargrave II (1801-93), who had also purchased some land nearby about two years earlier. When regular voting began for Racine County Board members in November 1850*, James Hargrave was elected as its first board member with all other candidates receiving no votes because they did not file formal applications with the county clerk’s office within four weeks following election day†*. By March 1861*, only one man still living in Hargraveville–John Kramlich–had registered to vote.* On May 2nd* (*before residents could register to vote by mail*) Kramlich moved into his present home which he had picked out as his residence ** *. A few days later he married Christina Tisch ††† which triggered mandatory military service requirements for citizens over 21 when Wisconsin became a state on April 6th‡”* [* residents needed proof that they could support themselves without working or paying taxes] but no one knows how many people actually served during this time period since most likely few if any ever left town***. In 1865*, wealthy businessman Julius Rosenwald donated land east of current Street between Park Avenue and South State Street for use as an agricultural college (later University)*** . When Rosenwald died suddenly less than two months before graduation ceremonies were scheduled***, university trustees scrambled to find another donor or sponsor immediately*** . One possible solution suggested by Trustee George Noyes involved selling off some acres surrounding campus so that money could be raised sufficient enough to cover tuition costs *** . However due to public outcry**** , nothing came of this idea either until Nearly Fifty Years Later***** when then Governor Tommy Thompson decided to provide free tuition at local colleges for all high school students regardless of wealth or lack thereof*****. To date there have been more than 50 alumni living in Germantown including 17 currently serving on local boards or committees**** *. Many well-known individuals from throughout Wisconsin have made visits or lives here such as House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) ***** * Note: Former Mayor Tom Barrett resigned effective December 15th 2009 due personal reasons unrelated to politics ***** *****
