The first settler in Germantown was Johann Gottlieb Kappel who arrived in October 1837 and purchased land at 3rd Street and Superior Avenue from John Beershebausen. In 1840, Kappel married Anna Moser who came from Racine with her family; they had one son named Friedrich Wilhelm Kappel Mauer born in 1840 and two daughters: Elisabetha Franziska Kappel (1843 – 1923) and Margaretha Emilie Kappel (1845 – 1923). In 1850, the first school opened up in Germantown with 16 students taught by Mrs Richardson; it burned down within a few months due to heavy rains which caused extensive flooding throughout the community. A new school building was completed in 1851 using funds provided by local resident Moses Schuller; it became known as “the white frame” school because of its coloration.
