The name of Franklin first appeared on a map in 1792 when James Bradley got lost while hunting in what is now Franklin County. He found his way back home by following a river known as the "Bear's Path." The first settler in Franklin was Samuel Chase, who built a cabin on what is now Hawk's Nest Hill Road in 1836. In 1851, John Wills moved to Franklin from Menomonee Falls and set up shop on Third Street near today's downtown area. By 1860, Wills had built two more stores and began construction of a sawmill that would soon become one of America's leading businesses. In 1865, he sold his interest in the mill to George Stephenson for $5,000 cash—a record for early Milwaukee business transactions. Franklin, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Outagamie County. The population was 7,856 at the 2010 census. Franklin was founded in 1851 by settlers from Vermont. The first post office in Franklin was established in 1853. In 1881, it became a city and it has since grown to be one of the largest towns in Outagamie County with over 12,000 residents. One of the most significant events that took place during Franklin's history is its role as the site of five presidential debates between Abraham Lincoln and John F Kennedy on October 6-8, 1960; these debates helped contribute to both men's election victory that year. Franklin has been called "the birthplace of American democracy." After being annexed by Milwaukee in 1898 as part of a boundary adjustment process following Milwaukee's annexation into Chicago, many businesses moved to Franklin including Jardine & Sons Auctioneers which continues to be headquartered there today. Many other notable institutions have also been located here such as Northwestern University (now Northwestern Memorial Hospital) which opened its doors in 1894 and still operates today under multiple campuses across three buildings on 20 acres near downtown Franklin; Lake Superior College (now Stony Brook University)opened its doors for business on November 1, 1949; and Kankakee Community College (now Northwest Missouri State University)opened their doors for business on September 15th, 1957 making it one of only two community colleges within outagamie county at that time when it opened its doors! Finally, much later after various expansions throughout the years including an indoor training center built adjacent to Lake Michigan beachfront property complete with an outdoor pool/spa complex completed in 2013 - 2003 - now known as lakefront campus - much later still when plans were made for what would become today’s south end zone - home arena for the Wisconsin Hockey League’s Green Bay Gamblers – development eventually happened! Today we know all about this project because nearly 50 years ago a large piece of land located east off I-94 currently occupied by Sheboygan County served as our new site for what would become our future north end zone - now known as “The Zone”!
