Franklin, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Dane County. The population was 12,549 at the 2010 census. The first white people to settle in Franklin were the Menominee Indian tribe. The city was platted in 1847 by Dutchman Isaac Brock, who named it for himself and his brother Jameson Franklin, both chiefs of the Menominee Tribe. The city's history dates back to 1847 when Dutchman Isaac Brock laid out a town site on land that he donated to the United States government as part of Treaty of Paris after the War of 1812. In 1850, William Lyon Mackenzie decided to move his fur business from Montreal to what is now Franklin and laid out a new town square on land that he purchased from Brock. In 1861, Ohioan John Sibley founded an agricultural colony near what is now downtown Franklin with permission from President Abraham Lincoln for American Indians living off reservations east of Chicago. Sibley soon realized that there was no market for his products so he abandoned his colony and filed for bankruptcy in 1862. In 1865, Illinois farmer George Washington Smith built a log cabin on what is now Center Street just south of Main Street in Franklin; this became home to one of America's earliest post office buildings (known as "Lion House" until 1902). In 1836, Franklin became the capital of the United States. The population was only around 12,000 when it moved to Franklin in 1836. After becoming the capital, it began to grow rapidly and by 1840 had a population of over 60,000. In 1847, Franklin was renamed Milwaukee after its first mayor John P. Milwaukee. The city grew even more rapidly during the late 1800s and by 1900 had a population of over 200,000 people.
