Franklin, Wisconsin is a small town located in the middle of the United States. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. The name Franklin comes from the French word "Frelon," meaning "wise one." The town started as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Many of the early settlers were fugitive slaves who had to run away from their owners in southern states such as Georgia and Alabama. In 1836, John A. Dixson organized a petition drive to create a town in what are now Franklin and Waukesha counties. On December 1, 1836, Dixson submitted a petition to the state legislature with this proposal: "that we may be enabled to establish ourselves without fear of being apprehended by any party or body that may hereafter hostilely oppose us." The first post office was established in Franklin on November 10, 1837; it was called North Prairie after Prairie du Chien,Wisconsin which was then part of Illinois. In 1840, Samuel Lynde founded what is now South Dakota School District No., #37 and moved his school there from Green Bay in order to open it up to all Indian nations living near his rancho de las Bragas rancho de San Francisco Mexican land grant east of present-day Franklin Boulevard on parts of which he donated including 800 acres (30 km2) for school purposes which later became Lynde Park Beach Preserve . In 1836, the town of Franklin was organized in the Town of Milwaukee County. The first post office opened in 1837. In 1841, the town had a population of just over 100 people. In 1863, an Act of Congress created Racine Park and authorized its purchase by the town for $5,000. The park has been owned and operated by the town since that time. The first high school in Franklin was built in 1865 and graduated its first class in 1870. In 1896, a new high school was built on site and graduated its second class in 1898. In 1916, Franklin became a city and Orchard Lake annexed it as part of that city's boundaries. In 1924, an act passed by the Wisconsin Legislature established Franklin-Orchard Lake School District No 2 which operates Franklin High School (grades 9-12) today under district rule with support from the City of Franklin
