Fort Atkinson is a small town in western Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dodge County and the home of the Fort Atkinson Police Department. The first European settlers to arrive in what is now Dodge County were French fur traders and missionaries in the late 18th century. For a time, Fort Atkinson served as their headquarters. The town was laid out in 1854 by Colonel John C. Smith, who named it for his friend and neighbor, General William Buell. Fort Atkinson grew rapidly during the early decades of this century thanks to its location at crossroads on two major wagon routes linking Chicago with Milwaukee and Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania; and its status as an important military post on both sides of the Great Lakes region. In 1907, fortifications were added to increase its security against Native American attack; within a few years however, Indian attacks had resumed so maximum protection had been gained and fortifications were removed again in 1916. The decline of post-World War II military activity throughout most of America led to Fort Atkinson's resurgence as an economic center during the late 20th century due to its natural resources (especially coal) and burgeoning tourism industry. However, recent economic downturns have caused some local businesses to close or reduce their activities; however, much remains intact from when Fort Atkinson was an agricultural center that also produced fruits such as apples and bananas . Today'sFort Atkinson is composed largely of bungalows built around Depot Road between 1909-1911 while development along Depot Road continues into today's Village Center area which contains many modern buildings including a bank building completed in 2006

In 1836, Major General Amos Kendall ordered Colonel Joseph Fitch to establish a militarypost on the upper Wisconsin River opposite present-day Green Bay. The fortification consisted of three earthworks: an inner work near present-day Green Bay; an outer work including a battery; and an outwork surrounding it which included several stockades. The garrison consisted of twenty officers and men under command of Colonel Fitch. On July 10, 1839, President Andrew Johnson issued Proclamation No.–1 calling for all citizens throughout America to make manifest their loyalty to the United States through arms or otherwise against Great Britain or any other foreign power or nation unrepresented within our limits… On July 15th this same year I approved said proclamation& authorized Col Joseph Fitch commands post heretofore commanded by Capt Balthazar de Grasse & Lieut Wm Jarvis… By order from me dated 8/27/1840 there remained only 2 Companies left under commandof Capts Fitch & Jarretts each Company having been reduced from 25 Men to 12 Men…. It should be noted that no hostile action took place during these years either within or without our posts although occasional skirmishes did take place between us & Indians living along both banks of the river [sic]’ In 1840, when hostilities ceased between Great Britain and America following its independence from Great Britain, troops remaining at Fort Atkinson moved into Green Bay under orders from Major General George Armstrong Custer who had recently arrived from Montana Territory with 1st Ulysses S Grant’s armychecksumming overland across North Dakota Territory into Canada after hearing news that forces loyal to Queen Victoria were marching towards Ft William Henry Harrisonburg east of Lake Superior]. At once upon arrival at Ft Atkinson rearguard duty began around 3pm on Sunday Aug 24th 1840 @ approx 30 miles due southwestsoutheast Of Green Bay WI…. Fort Atkinson was founded in 1837 as a small army post on the north shore of the Milwaukee River. The fort served as a base for troops stationed in and around the city of Milwaukee, and also functioned as a military depot for goods arriving from surrounding counties. The fort was abandoned in 1861, and its materials were used to build the new Fort Snelling near Minneapolis.
