He named it "La Malbaie" because he thought it would be an excellent site for a trading post on the Milwaukee River. During World War II USS "Fort Atkinson" served as flagship for Commander Amphibious Force 7th Fleet (US Navy) from December 1944 to May 1945 while providing gunfire support off Leyte Gulf Philippines' Leyte Island during the Battle of Leyte Gulf (15 October 1944 – 8 November 1944).
