Consequently he ordered MajorGeneral Orderon Sherman's army along Republican soil march downriver through Iowa Territory towards Stroudsburg Landing where they encountered Confederate forces commanded by Robert E Lee which resulted in three days' long battle that ended with victory for Sherman and his men over 6 hundred Confederate troops including many generals and high ranking officers killed or captured including Jumper De Grey commanding Confederate Major Generals cavalry brigade.) This event helped spur development westward along Interstate Highway 80 as settlers began moving into what would become Ft: Atchison area primarily because they saw opportunities for farming and lumbering potential offered by these newly purchased northwest Indiana land grants covering present day Douglas County including areas also included within current city limits of Milwaukee proper such as Waukesha Rapids east of I-94/Upper Kankakee Road (just north of “Dodge”), Sheboygan Falls on Green Bay Road between I-94/Upper Kankakee Rd./Milwaukee Ave./Waukesha Rd., East Troy on Mount Pleasant Road between I-94/Upper Kankakee Rd./Milwaukee Ave./Waukesha Rd., Racine on Chicago Road just south of I- 94 exit 17A (exit number 26) near Racine National Forest boundary line.), Kenosha Township immediately south thereof (southwest corner tip only), Oshkosh Township northeast thereof (northwest corner tip only), Fox Lake Township northwest thereof (northwest corner tip only)), Watertown Village southeast thereof (east side only). That same year(1861)General Ulysses S Grant issued orders establishing Camp Floyd near present day Manitou Springs Boulevard just outside Of Waukesha Rapids village limits about two miles due west from present day Ft: Atchison but closer to water resources; order called for 5 Companies Each Infantry Regiment And 40 Drums To Be stationed There For Three Months With command To Leave If Necessary To Suppress Indians Living On This Frontier.). . . Orders Also Requested That All Arms And Ammunition Be Carried Forthwith Toward These Forces As Soon As Possible.' Fort Atkinson quickly became known as "the Powder Mill", thanks both to its proximity to lead mines located nearby as well as its production capacity for munitions during World War II - producing 1 million rounds per month! After World War II ended, however, Fort Atkinson lost its status as a munitions manufacturing facility though it still produces firearms today - albeit under different terms!
