Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin was the site of a number of engagements between American and Native American forces during the early 1800s. The first such engagement took place on July 3, 1836 when United States Army Captain Samuel Henson attacked a band of Sioux Indians in what is now known as the Battle of Fort Atkinson. The Sioux were led by Standing Rock Sioux Chief Black Hills and they were assisted by two other chiefs, Oneida and Miami. Henson's force numbered around seventy-five men but he was quickly overwhelmed by the numbers and firepower of the Indian warriors. In addition to his own troops, Captain Henson also had three cannons manned by his soldiers. This battle is significant because it was the first time that firearms were used against Indian combatants in warfare and it also saw the beginning of regular artillery use against Native Americans. The second encounter occurred on November 2nd, 1842 when an American unit under General David Dixon attacked a group of Creeks at Big Sandy Creek. The Creeks had been conducting raids into Ulysses S Grant's army and they thought that this would be their opportunity to do so again. Dixon's force numbered about eighty-four men but he was able to launch an attack which resulted in four Creeks being killed and eight injured. This battle is significant because it marked the first time that firearms were used against Indigenous individuals in combat and it also marked the beginning of regular artillery use against Native Americans. The third encounter took place on January 12th, 1845 when a detachment from Brigadier General Isaac Brock's brigade attacked a band of Assiniboines at Little Bighorn River Bridge over Bozeman Creek near present day Fort Atkinson. Although outnumbered five to one, Brock succeeded in driving the Assiniboines back across Bozeman Creek using guerrilla tactics while sustaining only two casualties compare to eighteen killed and thirty-eight wounded for Captain Henson's team operations days earlier at Fort Atkinson . This battle is significant because it was one of only two occasions where handguns were used instead of traditional rifles against Indigenous individuals -the other instance being skirmish at Big Sandy Creek which took place with spears rather than firearms

In 1942, Fort Atkinson again became an independent community when it amalgamated with neighboring Greenfield to form the City of Milwaukee-Fort Atkinson Urban District No. 1 (laterMilwaukee-West Allis Urban District). Prior to that time, it had been part of Milwaukee’s east side suburbs only In 1984, Milwaukee abandoned its plan to build a new downtown freeway through parts of Downtown Milwaukee Industrial Park; instead they developed an urban renewal program which included demolishing much old industrial buildings along Clybourn Avenue between Michigan Avenue and State Street which formed part of the park boundary The old industrial buildings were used for construction materials for both new projects as well as for storage for future projects When all these plans failed to materialize due to structural problems with some structures resulting from previous renovation projects Mayor Tom Barrett declared that Fort Atkinson would become one more area where redevelopment has not happened because “it just doesn’t fit into this vision that we have for downtown”
