It consisted of two main grades: a lower grade for infantry troops and artillery, while the higher grade housed stores, barracks, and an artillery battery. The fort'sfour cannons were used to defend against Indian attacks on the frontier. In 1836, Fort Atkinson became home to 1st Regiment Michigan Volunteer Infantry under Colonel Edward Pemberton. In 1840, 1st Regiment Michigan Volunteers left Fort Atkinson for Mexico City where they fought in the Mexican–American War under General Winfield Scott. Afterward, 1st Regiment Michigan Volunteers returned to Ft Atkinson in 1845-46 service with US forces during the Black Hawk War against Native Americans at Lac du Flambeau Battlefield near Green Bay. In 1854, Ft Atkinson was decommissioned and its command structure transferred to Topeka, Kansas within US Army territory pursuant to Organic Act No. 1268 which authorized increased troop movements through Indian Territory into Minnesota Territory concurrent with treaty negotiations between United States representatives (represented by John Lewis) and Chief Ojibwe agent Pierre Dorion concerning removal of Native American nations from what is nowMinnesota via treaty signings at Lac la Croix on November 17th & December 4th 1854; these treaties resulted in more than 50% reduction of present-day Minnesota population by verified debris removed from sites including Fort Snelling’s ruins still standing today! After Topeka moved control over Ft Athena from Kansas Command Headquarters back eastward across state lines 3 years later on May 10th 1860 it reverted back once again back again back to Atkinson BarracksCommanding General George Armstrong Custer/Major General Alfred Terry who also concurrently served as Military Governor Of Dakota Territory at this time! The first European to visit Fort Atkinson was Father Pierre-Jacques Marquette in 1778. The fort was originally built as a trading post by the French in 1805. It was garrisoned for about 10 years before being abandoned in 1822. In 1846, the United States acquired the fort and began regularly using it as a military base. The fort was decommissioned in 1904 and finally sold to the Wisconsin Historical Society in 1912.
