It was renamed Fort Atkinson in 1892 after General George Armstrong Custer and his cavalry unit, the Seventh U.S. Cavalry Regiment. The current name is based on the history of Fort Atkinson and its surrounding area which has been connected with the Battle of Black Hawk Creek because that battle occurred just south of Fort Atkinson on October 17, 1846.
