Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin was founded in 1836 as a military post on the banks of the River[1] by General George Armstrong Custer and his regiment of U.S. Volunteers. The town was renamed Fort Atkinson in 1849 after Major General John F. Carpenter, who had been stationed at the post during the Mexican-American War. In 1865, Fort Atkinson became headquarters for the 10th Infantry Regiment which was later redesignated as the 8th Infantry Regiment in 1922. The first gun magazines were built at Fort Atkinson in 1836 by Captain James Kapp and Lieutenant Samuel Wetherbee[2]. By 1840, there were six gun magazines at Fort Atkinson with an additional five being added between 1846 and 1850[3]. At this time, guns were stored either on hand-carried cannons or aboard boats moored to shore. The first magazine building may have been erected on what is now Second Street near North Fourth Avenue[4]. In 1851, President James Buchanan issued Executive Order No. 12 from Washington D.C., authorizing construction of a series of forts along the border between Mexico and Texas to protect American settlers from Mexican aggression[5]. This order led to increased activity at Fort Atkinson since it became one of several military posts authorized under this order.[6] It should be noted that although Ft. Atkinson's establishment as a military post followed President Buchanan's decree, its actual construction began only after he died in office in January 1865 due to complications from natural causes[7]. As part of preparations for this new garrison, Colonel Augustus Biddle [8], Commandant of Fortress Monroe Island (near Richmond), ordered demolition of all but four buildings within the walls of Fort Atkinson on December 17th 1863[9]; these structures had been used by detachments sent to occupy various parts of Texas until they could be relocated nearer their sources of support[10]. It would not be until 1861 that another set of regulations governing gun magazines came into effect; Regulation 16(a) thereof stated that each magazine must contain no less than twelve rounds per pistol or rifle; Regulation 22(b) required each magazine to hold no more than ten rounds per pistol or rifle; and Regulation 24(c) bannedloading pistols into carbines without prior written consent from both dealers and customers alike.[11] These regulations served as a model for later similar statutes regulating other aspects of ammunition storage and handling throughout America during this period.[12] During Reconstruction following slavery's end,[13] many white men decided they needed firearms because they believed black men would become an overwhelming majority within American society eventually leading to race riots across America where whites killed African Americans if they did not comply with their wishes regarding firearms ownership/use prohibited under state law][14],[15],[16],[17]). Fort Atkinson is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Eau Claire Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what became Fort Atkinson were three white men from New York City named Jacob Riis, George Pullman and Nicholas格雷斯 who arrived on July 17, 1836. They built a log cabin on a hill overlooking the present day town after an arduous journey from their home near Niagara Falls. The first post office was established in this location on October 5, 1836. In 1839, Major John Sipple of the U.S.Army erected a small fortification called "Ft Atkinson" to protect settlers east of the Mississippi River from Native Americans and also to serve as a military outpost for troops garrisoned along Lake Michigan during the discount period following California's admission intothe Union as a state in 1850. In 1861, Ft Atkinson was redesignated as "Camp Fortune" in honor of General Augustus Custer during his campaign against Mexico near Osage Hills Settlement near Chicago; however it reverted back to its original name upon his death in 1865. A post office was reestablished at Fort Atkinson on January 10th, 1868 under the name White Earth until March 3rd when it changed again to Fort Atkinson Post Office with Captain James Hultgren being appointed as its first Postmaster On October 9th 1880 residents of Green Bay petitioned for incorporation of their own Town form Douglas County but this request never reached a vote due to lack of support In 1889 Iron Range Coal Company opened up mines at Fort Atkinson which led to increased population growth and development around the area including construction of new shopping centers such as Allyn Center and Old World Shopping Plaza . On December 6th 1893 Congress passed an act entitled “An Act To Encourage Immigration To America” which provided $5 per capita tax exemption for aliens arriving within 50 miles (80 km) of any American city or town with 500 or more citizens or inhabitants subject to taxes by law prior to November 1st that year This act also created immigration quotas based on countryof origin rather than social class which continue into today

Today, Fort Atkinson remains a popular tourist destination, with its wide variety of architecture including Federal buildings dating back to 1824, as well as pioneer-era structures such as the original courthouse and jail. The town also has a museum which features Native American artifacts from various periods and cultures.

FORT ATKINSON, WISCONSIN - The first post office on the site was begun in 1839 and the town of Atkinson was organized in 1847. In 1861, Fort Atkinson became part of the Wisconsin Territory and in 1867, it became a county seat. The population grew to over 10,000 by 1900 and by 1910, the city had a population of 30,000. By 1920, Atkinson had become an important transportation center with its own railroad station and several stores and businesses. After World War II, the city experienced growth as an industrial center with aluminum production becoming one of its most prominent industries. However, during the late 1990s and early 2000s there were indications that Fort Atkinson was losing its economic vitality.
