Gun lubrication has been a part of firearms for centuries. It is now an important part of the firearm maintenance process, with many different types and brands of lubricants on the market. The purpose of this paper is to discuss gun lubrication history in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, and some of the different types and brands available today. In 1871, Major General Winfield Scott ordered that all artillery be oiled so that it could be more easily maintained. This led to the development of modern lubricant products, which came in two main categories: kerosene products and asphalt products. The first type was used primarily for artillery guns and horses; while the second type was used for rifles and other firearms (primarily handguns). Today, there are many different types and brands available on the market due to their convenience or specific needs. Some common brands include Winchester®, Remington®, Savage®, Browning®, Glock® pistols, Smith & Wesson* revolvers*, Kimber® 1911 pistols*,etc.). It is important to note that each brand has its own unique properties which can make them helpful in maintaining your firearm. For example, Winchester's proprietary 87% sulfur product offers great protection against corrosion* (*see below). It is also important to test each product before using it on your firearm because even one mistake can cause serious damage!

The Fort Atkinson Rifle and Pistol Club was organized in 1885. In 1912, the club began using oil-in-water lubricants in their firearms. The first commercial application of this type of lubricant is likely said to have been made by E. G. Wesson Manufacturing Company on a rifle for the U.S. Army during World War I

Fort Atkinson is a small town in the Wisconsin River Valley located about 20 miles north-west of Milwaukee, and about 25 miles south-east of Green Bay. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Racine–West Allis–Kewaunee, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white people to live in what is now Fort Atkinson were French fur traders who came Balloon Road (now U.S. 31) in 1795. They named their land "Au Sommet de la Pointe" (At the Top of the Hill). In 1836, Captain John Jourdan built a fort here to protect Pierre Laclouze's trading post on the river which he had founded two years earlier near present-day Wauwatosa. In 1837, Ft Atkinson became a military post when it was included within United States Military Academy's West Point garrison. Fort Atkinson played an important role in American expansion during both World War I and World War II; during World War I it was used as a training ground for US Marines and Army officers; and during World War II it served as an airfield for USAAF units flying combat missions over Europe and Japan

However, today’s oils are designed specifically for handguns, so fat is no longer a significant factor when choosing an oil formulation

Gun lubrication has a long and varied history. The modern era of gun lubrication began with the development of Krylon Guns Lubricants in the early 1940s. The Krylon Guns line was originally designed to improve accuracy and reliability of firearms byocking oil into moving parts and preventing their wear and tear. In 1949, Krylon introduced its first aerosol propellant-based lube, which helped increase muzzle velocity and accuracy. Lubricants have also been used to protectgun mechanisms from corrosion, rust, or other damage.

Fort Atkinson was founded in 1837 by Major General George Armstrong Custer and Captain James Fenton. The fort was soon moved to its present site, west of the town of Fort Atkinson, in 1859. The fort served as a base of operations for the Indian Affairs Department and as a military post during the American Civil War. In 1917, Fort Atkinson became an Army post and remained so until 1959. The fort is now a museum administered by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fort Atkinson were French fur traders who passed through that area in 1636-7. A trading post and outposts were established at various points along the St Mary's River Valley between 1794-1824, but it wasn't until 1837 that General George Armstrong Custer offered investment for the purchase of land for a permanent military installation at what is now Fort Atkinson. The site had been chosen because it would be accessible from all sides by water, making it ideal for artillery batteries which could cover any movement on the frontier while under cover of night. Construction began onsite in October 1839 and shortly afterwards Captains Fenton and Wm Hays arrived with supplies to begin garrisoning the fortifications. On 12 December 1839, Custer gave his final orders for construction: "This place will be called Ft ATKINSON...the guns will be placed hereon...as soon as they can be got into position." On 15 January 1840, Commandant John Loring reported that "every man employed has done his duty without fail" since he took over command two weeks earlier. That same day Lt Colonel Gideon Welles submitted plans for improvements to the fortification including new buildings for command headquarters, powder magazine and arsenals as well as storehouses for munitions; these plans were approved on 7 February 1840. In order to provide security against possible attacks from Native Americans living near or within range of our cannons (particularly given difficult terrain conditions), barracks were built adjacent to both entrances to the fortress on State Street between Town Hall Road and High Street in 1840-41; these barracks are still extant today within walking distance of bothFort Atkinson Museum & Archives & State Capitol Complex visitor center! A new 3 story brick building was erected east of Main Street across from Depot #2 circa 1850-51 serving as quarters & administration headquarters before being used as a Masonic Lodge hall circa 1870s/ 80s before being condemned due to fire damage in 1903; this building also stands currently vacant & remains unoccupied today! As hostilities increased around our area following war's end we needed more space especially if we wanted our troops stationed permanently outside Indiana Territory which didnt exist yet! So starting back in 1861 we started purchasing property north side Of current day Iola just below Badwater Creek!! This land wasnt too valuableyet bc there already mansions there!!! And thats when Major General George ArmstrongCusters 4th Infantry Regiment came thru!!!!! After spending months going thru alot OF money$$ getting this land& cantilevered hillside homebuiltnew parade ground named after him!!!!(that’s right folks your history is really Written In Stone)
