In 1847, Fort Atkinson was established as a garrison for the newly formed Wisconsin Territory. The fort served as a training ground and later became arsenal. The gun hammer was an automated device that consisted of a main armory arm and two smaller arms that were attached to it by means of chains. The main armory arm was used to pound nails into wood while the smaller arms were used to chisel or file away at the surface of metal objects. In 1860, artillerymen from Fort Atkinson started using guns with hammers instead of nails to pounding onto wooden blocks outside the fort walls to create loopholes in them for shooting cannonballs out into the surrounding countryside. In 1868, General Phillip Sheridan raised an American regiment called the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment at Fort Atkinson and assigned it to duty at Waukesha County,Wisconsin. This unit fought against Native Americans during Red River Campaigns in 1870-71 and 1871-72. In 1876, Major James Biddle became commanding officer at Fort Atkinson and instituted new gun hammer usage there which included using hammers instead of nails when pounding onto blocks outside walls for creating loopholes for firing cannonsball projectiles out into neighboring farms or villages. By 1886, all cannons located withinFort Atkinson had been converted over to hammers however some cannons still retained their nails for ceremonial use until 1903 when they too were converted over to hammers; this process being completed by Lieutenant Colonel John Haught commandant of Ft Atkinson Barracks on July 11th 1903. Gun hammer usage gradually declined throughout most of 20th century due primarily to lack of interest from military personnel as well as technological advances leading up thereto such as electricians being able to replace old manual tools with digital ones making hammered objects more efficient and accurate than those utilizing nails alone even today; however Hammers are still occasionally used ceremoniously today by certain artillerymen stationed withinFort Atkinson Barracks whereupon they will remove any remaining nails before striking whatever object they are working on with their Hammer!

In 1862, General George Buford selected Fort Atkinson as his temporary winter encampment for his brigade commandersTFIRST ARMY IN THE WILDERNESS (1862-1865) while their camps were constructed south of Dodge City north of buffalo Lake east of present day Appleton . This area would later become known as Camp Randall which opened tothe public on April 15th 1865 In 1903, construction began on what would become Damen Boulevard which ran parallel to streets that constituted today's northwest side of town limits with an open field separating it from what is now downtownFort Atkinson . While much progress had been made since then including expansion onto portions of that property still within town limits , Decatur Avenue bridge replaced old pioneer causeway crossing near present day intersection of Elmira Road and Damen Boulevard
The Fort Atkinson Campaign was fought in the autumn of 1849 by United States and British forces against the Sioux. The Battle of Fort Atkinson resulted in a U.S. victory and ended the war between the United States and the Sioux.
