Fort Atkinson was first established in 1854 as a post on the east bank of the Wisconsin River. The name "Fort Atkinson" is derived from an old French word meaning "fortification." The fortifications were built to protect settlers from Native American raids and to provide a military garrison for the traders and travelers who passed through the area. The first settler in Fort Atkinson was James Horsburgh, who arrived in 1854. In 1861, General George Armstrong Custer set up his headquarters here while he fought at Battle of Little Big Horn. After Custer's death, Fort Atkinson became operational as a garrison for three years before it was abandoned in 1867 because of lack of funds. In 1870, local entrepreneur John Stephenson donated land for a new postoffice and school which opened in 1872. In 1893, Fort Atkinson became home to one of America's first industrial plants when Jens Jensen established his Milwaukee-based Jenks Rubber Company here. The company grew rapidly and by 1911 had become one of the largest rubber companies in the world; its products included tires, shoe leathers and car parts. Jensen sold his interest in Jenks Rubber Company in 1916 and founded another large business called Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (now Michelin). During World War II, Fort Atkinson played an important role as both an airfield servicing bomber planes based at Green Bay Airport and as headquarters for Third Army during Operation Market Garden outside Amsterdam Netherlands on 9 August 1944 until 8 September 1944 when it finally surrendered after numerous resistance attempts by its troops under Lieutenant Colonel Frederick Eikenberry Jr.. After World War II ended, Fort Atkinson experienced rapid growth with many businesses opening up within its borders including Waukesha Paper Products Corporation (later Kimberly-Clark), Manitowoc Tool Works (later Mason Machine Tools), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (now Michelin) and formerly Jenks Rubber Company until it merged with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company on 3 July 1951 to form what is today known as Johnson Controls Incorporated ().
