Fort Atkinson is a small town in the central part of Wisconsin, United States. It was first settled in 1838 by Potawatomi Indians and was named after General Anthony Wayne. The town became an important rail junction and manufacturing center during the 1850s and 1860s. In 1865, Fort Atkinson became the site of the Gunnery School of Fort Atkinson, which trained officers to use firearms for military purposes. From 1870 to 1890, Fort Atkinson was also home to the Armoury Depot, which served as a storage facility for guns and ammunition. The depot closed its doors in 1990. The city of Milwaukee acquired portions of what is now Fort Atkinson in 1907 and renamed it Milwaukee County. In 1919, the city annexed what is now parts of Green Bay and Waukesha counties into Milwaukee County; these annexations left Fort Atkinson with just a few hundred residents. Starting in the early 2000s, however, growth has resumed at least partly because of development around the old armory site on Sherman Avenue near Zionsville Road. Fort Atkinson is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is considered to be a part of Green Bay metropolitan area and forms the eastern border of that city's east side. The fortifications were built in 1846 by General Winfield Scott to protect Green Bay from French and Indian attacks during the Northwest India Expedition of 1846-48. The first settler in Fort Atkinson was John Kirkland, who arrived in 1847. He built his home on the site of what is now Main Street and called it Kirkland House. In 1850, Major Nathan Klinefelter founded another settlement, East Prairie, across the tracks from Fort Atkinson; he named it after his father, Nathan Klinefelter Sr., who had been killed in a skirmish with French forces near Lake Superior two years earlier while serving as lieutenant colonel for the 2nd United States Infantry Regiment under General Winfield Scott's command. In 1853, Captain Augustus Donahue replaced Klinefelter as leader of East Prairie and began construction on a fortified settlement known as Donahue Barracks; this structure served as headquarters for both East Prairie and Fort Atkinson until its abandonment in 1861 following Yorktown Theater military engagements nearby. One year later, Donahue bestowed upon Fort Atkinson its present name – Fort Atkinson National Military Park – after his friend and fellow officer Colonel George Custer's death in battle at Washita River Bridge over which he had led an attack just weeks earlier. A second fortification was completed at Fort Atkinson by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer shortly before his death during action against Chief Sitting Bull at Rosebud Creek on October 16,1876; this structure became known as Round Top Hill within days of its completion thanks to notes left behind by Custer's bodyguard detail upon their return to camp that morning after engaging Chief Sioux warriors approximately five miles distant at Massacre creek village northwest of Rosebud Creek Junction (present-day Waukegan). Thereafter various other installations were constructed along various sections of US Native American trade route leading upriver past Ft Asker (present day Kenosha) through present-day Green Bay: White Water Point Old Agency (now West Allis), Boones Ferry Landing (later renamed Sturgeon Point), Blackwater Draw (), Clearwater Swamp (), White Notch (), Moccasin Hills (), etc.; all these works are still extant today including numerous cannons still pointing into Green Bay today! Finally, on September 11th 1903 Majestic No 4 Ammunition Factory opened located off High Street adjacent to present day South Side Elementary School building - one of only 6 such factories licensed by Army Ordnance Dept & placed inside USA After WWII!

Fort Atkinson was established in 1855 as a military post on the Lower Wisconsin River. The fort was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who died in 1887 during the American Civil War. The fort served as a base of operations for the Indian Wars and later became a center for agricultural production. In 1916, Fort Atkinson was renamed Fort Snelling after Major General John A. Snelling, commander of United States Forces Europe during World War I. The fort saw its first combat in 1854 when Native Americans attacked it. Afterward, the fort functioned as a garrison and training ground for Union troops until it was surrendered by Iowa forces in 1865. From 1865 to 1898, Fort Atkinson played an important role in Reconstruction South America. In 1903, Fort Atkinson became part of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and is still used today as part of that institution's educational program.

The first Europeans to enter what is now Fort Atkinson were French in 1778. The site had been visited by the Spanish before that, but it was not until 1792 that they built a fort on the site. In 1803, the United States acquired the land from France and began construction of Fort Atkinson as part of their war effort against Mexico. The fort served as a military post during the American Civil War and was decommissioned in 1865. It was reactivated in 1969 as a research center for agricultural science and technology.
