Bullets in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin date back to the early 1800s. The first shot fired in the town was a cannon ball that hit a tree near the fort on December 8th, 1818. Bullets were used for target practice and as artillery ammunition until 1898. In 1892, Fort Atkinson became an Ammunition Plant. From 1902-1935 bullets were made from lead and brass. Bullet production stopped in 1935 because of World War II. Today, bullet production at the plant takes place through metal casting and powder manufacturing techniques. The fort has been home to many military engagements over the years including battles against Native Americans, Confederate forces, and American troops during both World Wars I and II. It also serves as a museum today which features exhibits on firearms history, ammunition production, and local militias.

The fortification helped protect Green Bay from Confederate forces while also providing supplies and reinforcements to Union troops stationed nearby. In 1898, after Wisconsin gained its independence from United States governance, Fort Atkinson became part of the newly created Milwaukee County government and continued to serve as both a military installation and administrative center until its closure in 1966. Today, Fort Atkinson remains an important cultural and historical landmark within the community with its own museum which tells the history of the fortifications and local residents who lived there during various periods. Fort Atkinson is a small town in the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' (WDNR) Iron County, located about 20 miles northwest of Milwaukee. The fort was built in 1846 on land donated by Samuel Wilkinson and his wife, Lucy. It was one of five forts erected during the War of 1812 to defend the area against British attacks. The fort served as a military post until it was abandoned in 1865. The fort has been used as a museum since 1978 and also houses the Sam Wilkinson House, which is the only remaining structure from the original town site. The house is open to visitors Friday through Sunday from 9am to 4pm and admission is free. In addition to its historical significance, Fort Atkinson also contains an interpretive center with exhibits on local history, agriculture, art, and culture.
On October 1, 1836, Fort Atkinson was founded by United States Marines. The fort was built on the Wisconsin River and became a garrison for the Army during the American Civil War. In 1865, Fort Atkinson was renamed to Prairie du Chien and in 1896 it was named after Ulysses S. Grant. The post remained active until its closure in 1960.
