The Fort Atkinson Armory was founded in 1898 by the late Colonel George F. Armistead and his wife, Mrs. Alice L. Armistead. It was initially located on County Road A in what is now the town of Fort Atkinson, but soon relocated to a more modern facility on County Road C near present-day Manitowoc. The armory was originally built as a three-story wooden structure with an attached garage and 30 rifle magazines. In 1907, additional floors were added to the rear of the building and it became known as the “Fort Atkinson Arsenal”. The armory served as both a storage depot for military equipment and also functioned as a shooting range for local farmers during the early years of World War I. After the war, Fort Atkinson Armory continued to serve as an important training ground for local gunners until its closure in 1951.

Wilkinson's grandson William Fenton Wilkinson served as mayor from 1907 to 1912; he also served as lieutenant governor from 1923 to 1929 under Governor Antonin Scalia; he later served as Mayor of Milwaukee from 1938 to 1944 before becoming U.S. Ambassador to Czechoslovakia from 1949 to 1951; he then resigned due to health problems before dying in office on July 25th, 1952 aged 76 years old after serving his country fully throughout its history starting with World War 1 until his death four years earlier at age 82 years old which made him one of only six Americans ever elected president term two terms (Ulysses S Grant being another).
