The fort served as a base for operations during the Mexican-American War from 1846-1848 when it defended Mexico City from American attacks while also providing cover for Gen Francisco de Valdez’s army advancing into Texas on October 15th, 1847. In 1865, Fort Atkinson became part of the Union army under General Belknap during the American Civil War when it became known as post number three (later post number one). On September 11th 1861, Confederate General Robert E Lee attacked Union troops near Fort Atkinson which led to US casualties numbering 9 killed and 22 wounded including Major General Custer who died as a result of his wounds four days later on September 13th 1861 at Appomattox Court House Marylandsequently becoming one of America’s most celebrated military martyrs following his death at age 42 years old on October 12th 1861 whilst leading 579 cavalrymen against 611 Confederate soldiers commanded by Generals Richard Halleck and Stonewall Jackson

In World War I, Fort Atkinson helped organize Allied forces against Germany. During World War II, Fort Atkinson played an important role in the Invasion of Normandy and later Operation Market Garden.
