Fort Atkinson is a town in Green and Douglas counties, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 6,904 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Green County. Fort Atkinson was founded in 1836 by the United States military as an outpost on the Great Lakes frontier to protect American traders from British Indians. The town name derived from English fort Atkinson on Lake Winnebago which served as a stopover for fur traders seeking passage to Fort Mackinac on the Michigan Peninsula. The first settler in what would become Fort Atkinson was John Morse who located his cabin near present day downtown in 1836. He and his wife named their new home "Morse's Grove." A year later, he donated land to the government for a post office and trading depot. In 1840, Major George Armstrong moved into what would become Fort Atkinson and began construction of a fortification that would serve as America's first land-based naval base on the Great Lakes region. In 1848, settlers arrived from Minnesota who had been driven out by Native Americans during their final campaign of resistance against European encroachment into their ancestral lands known today as Manitoba andMinnesota Territories. The first permanent residents of Fort Atkinson were Methodist missionaries led by Revd Elias Sibley who arrived in 1849 along with several hundred other followers of Methodism across North America under General James Kossuth's leadership during the Unitarian Convention movement which sought religious toleration for all denominations across denominational lines across North America including those within Christianity which at that time constituted about one-third of total population growth rates throughout North America between 1790 and 1830). The townspeople established a store and school in 1850 which became its central business district; two churches were built soon afterwards: First Baptistchurch (1856) designed by architect Obadiah Miller & contractor Jno Waddell & Brothers – now part of Episcopal Cathedral; Second Congregational Church (1860) designed by architect Asa Gray – now called First Presbyterian Church; three schools: Blackhawk School (1852), White Hawk School (1854), Seward Academy (1862). A post office was organized at Fort Atkinson on December 1, 1851 serving both Green County and Douglas County until it closed on April 15th 1865 due to lack of mail service between these two counties following Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House four days earlier that summer during the American Civil War. When Lincoln assumed power after Ulysses S Grant's death in 1865 he ordered all US postal services be discontinued nationwide due to budget restrictions effective July 1st following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation just one week priorm local mail service had continued uninterrupted thanks to private enterprise operating under Postal Order No 5169 through May 1861 providing local essentials such as food, clothing, news items etc.) For more than fifty years Ft Atkinson served primarily as an agricultural center supplying products needed for local farmers markets while also hosting various events such as rodeos featuring livestock from surrounding areas

Today, Fort Atkinson is a tourist destination and popular research center forWisconsin history. The first settlers to Fort Atkinson were soldiers from Illinois who arrived in 1854. The fort was manned by officers and men from Indiana, Pennsylvania, and New York City. The soldiers were tasked with protecting travelers traveling along the Wabash River. In 1855, President James Buchanan ordered General John C. Frémont to march on Chicago to demand recognition of Mexico as a country. When Frémont failed to arrive at his destination, Buchanan decided to send forces under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer to detect him. On July 26, 1855, Custer's column reached Fort Atkinson and discovered that Frémont had not crossed the Missouri River into Mexico proper! After consulting with his superiors, Buchanan decided not to pursue Frémont but instead sent army units eastward toward West Point on September 8th. On October 1st,1855, Commodore John Teller sailed up the Mississippi River and landed his navy's USS Constitution at Prairie du Chien (now Peoria) Illinois after defeating French forces in what is now known as the “ Battle of Prairie du Chien” This victory led directly to Dred Scott v Rehnquist case which ended slavery in America
Fort Atkinson was built in 1837 and served as a military post until 1862. It became the county seat of Winnebago County in 1871 and was abandoned in 1944. In 1960, it was designated a National Historic Landmark.
