Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin is a town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 10,569 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the six towns in Dane County and it is surrounded by Evanston Township to the north, Beloit Township to the east, Menomonee Falls Township to the south, and Stoughton Township to the west. Fond Du Lac is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first white settlers in what is now Fond Du Lac were men from New Jersey who arrived in 1792. They built a log cabin on an island in Fox Lake and named it after their home state of New Jersey. The first school was established in 1814 and taught grades one through twelve. In 1881, a sawmill was started in town and soon became one ofWisconsin's largest employers. By 1912 there were twenty-four businesses operating in town with over 1,000 employees. With World War I starting up and demand for munitions high during that time period, mills closed but reopened within a few years as production picked up again; however Wacoal Oil Co., which had been founded by three local businessmen brothers in 1916 (Edwin Cramer Sr., Edwin Cramer Jr.,and Frank Janssen) did not close until 1938 when they merged into another oil company creating Wacoal Petroleum Corp.; this led to manufacture shutdowns throughout early 1918 due largely to wartime restrictions on fuel sales). During World War II Ursula Ratcliffe started work at her family's grocery store called "The General Store" on State Street before she married Harold Ratcliffe who ran it with her sister Norma from 1944-1957; both women are buried at Holy Cross Cemetery near downtown Fond Du Lac (Norma also married John Hiestandt who operated Badger Tire & Rubber Company from 1947-1959). A post office called Fonda opened February 24th 1888 under control of Howell County since no village had been organized yet within Dane County; however service was discontinued November 5th 1888 because of lack of mailboxes [the modern post office building has been constructed on Main Street between Third Avenue South and First Avenue North]. Fonda eventually became known as "The Post Office", then "The General Store". In 1911–12 two new churches were built: Our Lady of Lourdes Church on West Main Street just north of present day Second Avenue South (later renamed Notre Dame de la Garde Parish) and Saint John's Episcopal Church located on East Main Street across from present day Third Avenue South which served residents until 1954 when it also became part of Notre Dame de la Garde Parish; both churches remain extant today as well as several other buildings associated with their denominations including an elementary school that housed grades Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth Grade from 1927-1981 (now used as Northwestern Illinois University), numerous fraternal organizations including Odd Fellows Lodge No. 238(WI), Masons Lodge No. 9A(WI), Knights Templar No 3rd Degree(WI), Shrine Temple Incorporated - officiated over by Bishop George Joseph Healey since 1959[4], various convenience stores/cafeterias/restaurants including Ziggy's Hamburgers & Pizza Place[5], current City Hall Building erected 1956 which houses most city services such as Mayor’s Offices Department along with portions of City councils meeting space originally used for High School graduation ceremonies etc.; businesses inside include Kwik Shop Liquor Store[6] Accordingly although some small villages continued to operate isolated from larger communities for many years following Milwaukee’s incorporation into Dane County effective July 6th 1836 [see map attachedFor more information about this process see History section below!], all actual Village Development Plans for those six towns submitted prior to July 6th 1836 were either abandoned or never implemented due simplyto lack or hesitation among would-be Developers regarding potential conflicts resultantfrom amalgamation with neighboring Towns or Milk River Valley Communities resultingin creationof several large Cities within our borders! Consequently even though longtime Residents may have “knew better” – they ultimately acquiesced thereto because they felt left out & unheard during what should have been their biggest chance ever To Participate In And Play Crucial Role In Making THEIRTown Or Village THE Hub Of Activity For All Of Those ELSENeighboring Towns!!! The fact remains That Had Their wishes Been Adopted Prior To July 6th1836… Most would Have Enjoyed Longer Term Stability And hadn't Begun experiencing AllOf What We've Seen Now transpired!!

Fond Du Lac was originally a small farming community in the now-suburban area of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The town was first founded by French and Belgian settlers in 1854 as Fort Dearborn. In 1855, the town was renamed Fond Du Lac after the river du lac which forms its border. The first post office opened in Fond Du Lac on October 1, 1855. The town's population reached a peak of 350 in 1870 but declined to 100 by 1890. By 1920, the population had decreased to 50 and by 1970 it had shrunk to 10 people. The original school building that still stands today is from this time period. The economy of Fond Du Sac changed greatly during World War II when most manufacturing ceased production in the area due to wartime demand for war materials. After the war, many farmers left Fond Du Lac and the town became a low-income neighborhood with few jobs available for locals. Some hope exists that development will bring new life to these neighborhoods and make them more vibrant with businesses and cultural opportunities like ArtWalk events happening throughout summertime
