In 1853, French Canadian settlers moved into what is now Fond Du Lac from Iron County, Minnesota and began to cultivate land around what are now downtown and parts of eastern Side Street. This group had strong connections to Montreal because they were all Huguenot refugees who had fled religious persecution in France during the 16th century. The first school was built in 1854 by localschool teacher Ebenezer Sheehan (1805-1881). When Milwaukee was founded in 1847, many Irish immigrants came overland through Canada and landed at Point Pelee on Lake Superior near modern day Green Bay; these men joined other settlers who had come overland including men who had been hired byGeneral John Custer as guides for his campaign against Sitting Bull’s Sioux War band at Little Bighorn (July 4, 1862). Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and is the county seat of La Crosse County. The population was 927 at the 2010 census. The community has been around since 1854 when it was founded by two men, John A. Fond and Augustus O'Hara, on land that had belonged to the Potawatomi tribe. Its name comes from French for "birthplace of the ducks." The first settlers arrived in 1854, but there were no permanent residents until 1873 when Cyrus H. Smith moved his family to Fond Du Lac from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin and became its first mayor. In 1907, another settler named Edward Prentice moved to Fond Du Lac from Racine, Wisconsin and founded what would become known as Sears Roebuck & Co., one of America's most iconic department stores. Families who have called Fond Du Lac home include those started by Captain Cook in 1792 during his exploration of North America; General George Armstrong Custer's troops during their march through Fond Du Lac in July 1863 during the American Civil War; Hollywood star Humphrey Bogart's father-in-law Louis Bischoff; General Electric co-founder Samuel Inskeep; author Ernest Hemingway; and actor Clark Gable. Fond Du Lac was founded by the Pere Marquette Expedition in 1836. The town was named for John Fonda, an American fur trader and sheriff of Green Bay. The first post office was established in 1838. In 1846, the village of Fond Du Lac was platted and became a town. The first school opened in 1847 and the first church in 1850. A dam was built near Fond Du Lac in 1853 to provide water for irrigation purposes and also served as a military base during World War II.
