The river was a primary source of water for many local farms and businesses. Fond Du Lac is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The population was 20,711 at the 2010 census. Fond Du Lac is part of the Racine–Kaukauna, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Fond Du Lac was Jean Nicolet in 1634 and he named it after his home village of Fonteinen in Dutch New Netherland. The first permanent settler arrived in 1771 when John Duryea came from Scots-Irish settlers near present day Green Bay and built a cabin on the east side of the river where he named it "Duryea's Grove." There were other early settlers including Nicholas Shurtleff (1772-1851), who came with his family from Rhode Island and opened a trading post on an old sandbar known as Muskegon Lake which he called "Fonda" or "Shurtleff's Point." In 1836, Nicollet donated land to create a town site that would be home to more than 100 pioneer families; this included Isaac De Pere (1784-1837) who had purchased land east of present day Fond Du Lac from Nicholas Shurtleff and built a gristmill on Big Creek. By 1840, there were 400 residents in Fond Du lac with three churches and two schools; by 1850 there were 904 residents with eleven churches and thirteen schools. In 1853, when Wabash Rapids was established as the county seat for Racine County, FondDuLac became its first incorporated community. By 1870, all but one of Racine County’s twenty towns had incorporation; however, only five out of seventy-one municipalities within Racine County formed Towns corporation until 1890 when most villages consolidated into one municipality under that name: Kewaunee City (1901), Oshkosh (1902), Sheboygan (1903), Green Bay (1907), Manitowoc (1909). In 1907, Manitowoc merged with Sheboygan to form Madisonville while Kewaunee City disbanded after being acquired by Milwaukee in 1924. With few exceptions over time each town within Racine County continued to exist as an individual municipality through annexation by neighboring towns or consolidation into larger municipalities during various periods; however for most of this period consolidation into larger municipalities occurred primarily due to financial problems or political pressure from adjacent cities which desired greater jurisdictional control over rural areas particularly within their boundaries such as Milwaukee where merchants wanted increased access to transportation resources and manufacturing plants while also maintaining close relationships with their rural neighbors In 1955 referendum voters approved creation of Dane County following federal approval via Iowan Act No 44 cosponsored by Senator Joseph McCarthy which shifted all election authority from Iowa governor’s office back under state government control effective January 1st 1956 In 1990 merger process completed resulting in total dissolution of thirty-six separate municipalities making way for new Town Corporation names as follows: Kaukauna Township - Kaukauna Consolidated Village Incorporated ; Whitefish Bay - Whitefish Bay Consolidated Village Incorporated ; Menomonee Falls - Menomonee Falls Consolidated Village Incorporated ; La Crosse - La Crosse Municipal Corp.; Winnebago - Winnebago Municipal Corp.; Appleton - Appleton Municipal Corp.; Neenah - Neenah Municipal Corp.,and River Falls – River Falls Municipal Corporation .

Fond Du Lac was founded in 1836 by Peter and Rebecca Leakey. The town was named after the du Lac River, which runs through it. The town growth came about because of the rise in manufacturing and trade around the area. Fond Du Lac became a major center for railroad transportation and became known as a hub for the Midwest. After World War II, Fond Du Lac grew increasingly dependent on agriculture, particularly from corn production. In the 1970s and 1980s, some downtown businesses were lost to redevelopment projects but overall business has remained strong throughout its history.
