According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of 2000, there were 1,814 people in Fond Du Lac. Of these, 927 lived in buildings over one story high: 553 were single family homes and 352 were multi-family homes; 421 businesses used more than 50 employees; 318 residents worked in farms or livestock production; 192 residents did not work any jobs; 67 students attended schools within walking distance of their homes; 15 local businesses had no fewer than five employees: nine restaurants/cafeterias/bars, seven convenience stores/convenience store chains (CVS Pharmacy Inc., Walmart Supercenter Co., Target Corp.), six auto dealerships (Jeep Wrangler dealership - four locations), four boatyards (Marathon Marina LLC) and two outdoor gear retailers (Boreal Outdoors & Camping Supply). In 1999-2000 it was announced that FondDuLac would be home to a new NHL team called Milwaukee Admirals after failed bids from St Louis Blues and Nashville Predators

Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin is a small town in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,651 at the 2010 census. Fond Du Lac is located on the Fox River, about 20 miles east of Green Bay and 30 miles south of Milwaukee. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fond Du Lac were French fur traders in 1639. The area was then known as "Nissac", after Pierre Nissac, one of the early explorers and mapmakers in North America. In 1846, when it became part of Minnesota, Fond Du Lac became part of that state's Dodge County. In 1867, it became part of Brown County when those counties were created from portions of Michigan and Wisconsin's Menomonee Valley Districts. In 1907, Fond Du Lac was incorporated as a village under the new Walker Act which authorized incorporation by popular vote only for villages with a population over 575 residents at the time (the maximum population at that time in Wisconsin). At this time there were just 52 residents living inside its boundaries- but within three years that number had grown to 301! In 1932, because growing populations density made transportation difficult to manage without becoming a municipality (see below), FondDuLag merged with neighboring towns Dodge City and Janesville into one municipality called Madison Township (later Racine). Fond du Lac has been an active community since its founding; through agricultural production and commerce it has supported many businesses over the years including banks and insurance companies as well as daycare centers and schools- service providers that have helped make family life easier for residents."
Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin was founded on August 24, 1836 by Isadore and Marie Sauk. The town was named after the Du Lac River. The town became a railroad center in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1925, Fond Du Lac became a city.
