Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin is a city in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Racine County. Fond Du Lac was founded in 1837 and named for John Fonda. The first white settlers in what is now Racine County were French Canadian traders and furriers who arrived during the early years of the American Revolution. In 1795, Samuel DeWitt moved from Burlington, Vermont to what is now Racine County and began trading goods with Native Americans. He became one of the first Europeans to settle in what are now Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties. DeWitt's son-in-law, Nicholas Flourish, also started trading with Indians along the Fox River in present-day Green Bay and formed a partnership with Chief Massasoit called The Great Lakes Fur Company. This company developed trade routes between Lake Superior and Illinois through present day Wisconsin Territory as well as developing land around Marquette which became Milwaukee later on. In 1837, John Fonda came toWI from Rochester, New York to take up his father's furrowed land grant nearpresent-day Fond Du Lac on Fox River west of Green Bay; this area would become known as "Fonda Township". A school was built there by 1840 but closed due to Indian hostilities that year; it reopened in 1851 under local leadership under the name "DeWitt Academy" (later renamed "Fonda High School"). The town site was surveyed by Jno Crainics & Co., surveyors for US Land Grant No 181 dated November 15th 1846 which included: all or part of present day Racine County east of I-94; most or all of Waukesha County north of I-94 including its village core located within current Willmar Township; much or all of Barron County including its village core located within current Menasha Township; all or part of Crawford County including its village core located within present day Sheboygan City limits; some or all parts of Dodge County including its village core located within present day Dubuque City limits On July 15th 1860 an act passed by Congress authorized formation of townships similar to those proposed by Jno Crainics & Co.; these townships were organized into counties on November 15th 1861 when Wisconsin Statutes were amended creating Racine (now Decatur) County outof these earlier township boundaries
Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin is a city in and the county seat of Winnebago County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 61,541 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth most populous city in Wisconsin and the third largest city in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The name Fond Du Lac comes from "Fond du Lac", an Ojibwe word meaning "place where water flows". The first Europeans to visit what is now Fond Du Lac were French fur traders working for La Salle Expedition in 1673–1674. In 1836, Underwood established a stop on this then-named branch of the Great Lakes Railroad near present-day Fond Du Lac. At first only farmers used the stop but by 1845 it had become a railway station with passenger and freight services. On July 1, 1846, when Chicago was admitted as a separate municipality within Illinois, Fond Du Lac became its second town; under Illinois law at that time towns were initially created as one unit with equal representation but this arrangement changed after Chicago's incorporation into Michigan Territory in 1787. In 1851 – 52 local officials met to create a town plan for what would become downtown Fond Du Luc which included two blocks of land bounded on each side by Third Street (now Wabash Avenue) and Washington Boulevard (now Menomonee Avenue). This plan failed due to lack of support from citizens but did provide impetus for further development around downtown over time. By 1865 attempts had been made to rename downtown after military leaders or prominent citizens such as Myron Hixon or General John Pershing; however no consensus emerged about who should be honored so suggestions continued until 1893 when Mayor Auren ordered that all names proposed for downtown should be considered for review before being adopted. The following year saw significant growth along 3rd Street with construction of new buildings including City Hall which served both as government center and business district until moved to its current location next door in 1902. The post office building built between 1906 and 1907 also served as city hall until it burned down in 1944. This increase was possible because railroads arrived in town during this period which allowed goods to move quickly between markets across America without having to go through New York City or other larger ports like Boston or Philadelphia During World War II many factories were set up along 3rd Street including Ford Motor Company and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company which produced shoes, tires and related items for soldiers overseas while other manufacturers operated out of converted shipping containers called 'Bunkers'. These latter companies started producing products such as T-shirts and sweatpants soon after Pearl Harbor showed Americans their need for these materials during wartime times
