In 1840, a man named Jabez Fitchburg was convicted of feloniously wounding a white person in what was then called the "Fitchburg Massacre." He served only 2 years of his 5 year sentence before being pardoned and returning to Wisconsin. In 1851, he and his wife were indicted for shooting at a group of Indians that had trespassed on their property. They were found not guilty but jailed for 3 months before being released on bail. In 1857, Jabez Fitchburg married Narcisse Marie Sauveur and moved to Fitchburg, Wisconsin. There he founded the first post office in the town. In 1861, he became mayor of Fitchburg and served until 1865 when he resigned because of term limits set by the Wisconsin General Assembly. Jabez Fitchberg died in 1870 at age 83 years old.
Fitchburg is a town in the towns of Fitchburg and Beloit in Washington County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,611 at the 2010 census. The first settlers were German Catholics who arrived from Germany in 1837. The name "Fitchburg" came from James Fitch, one of the original proprietors of this territory. The land that now makes up Fitchburg was bought by John Beals in 1854 and given to him as part of his gift to the town. The first school in what is now Fitchburg was built on the corner of State and Washington streets in 1857. It held classes for six weeks each year and was run by Mrs. Aiken-Harding. In 1861, the first high school (later called Beloit High School) opened with twenty-six students; it operated until 1959. That same year, the town added a public library which still operates today as one of Wisconsin's largest municipal libraries with over 350,000 items on its shelves! In 1907, a new church/church ground was dedicated at Fourth and Washington Streets; it served as our current parish church until 1965 when we moved to Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish across street! The Revs./Msgrs.-Jorge Gomez (1907-1965), Edward Jager (1966-1976), Monsignor John Noonan (1977-1981), Fathers Leo Vallone (1982-1984) – all celebrated laymen pastors during their long tenure here! One of our most famous residents through her many accomplishments locally & nationally was Sister Divine Conchita Alonso de Jesus y Salazar who resided here from 1957 until her death on July 3rd 2019 at age 98 years old! She remains an inspiration for discernment & prayer daily w/all people!

Fitchburg is a town in the central part of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Elkhart County seat and the larger Fitchburg, Wisconsin metropolitan area. The towns of Beloit and Fitchburg are also in Elkhart County. Fitchburg was founded by John Fitch in 1836 as a small farming community on the east bank of the Kankakee River. In 1847, he built a sawmill on his farmstead to provide employment for his family and mill workers from neighboring villages. By 1860, Fitchburg had become an important commercial center with stores, hotels, and other businesses catering to farmers and Merchantsville downstream on the river. In 1883, following passage of the railroad act that created Illinois Central Railroad Company (IC), local leaders formed a new company to build track southward from Chicago into Wisconsin Territory. To commemorate this occasion, they named their new railroad company "The Milwaukee Road" after Milwaukee County, Wisconsin's most populous city at that time. The original line ran from east to west through downtown Fitchburg before turning southeast towards Menomonee Falls; it became known as "the old road". By 1886, when IC merged with others forming United States Railroads (USR), Fitchburg had become one of its largest rail terminals along with Chicago and St Louis Railway Terminal No. 2 (now Union Station). Passenger service began on May 14th 1886 with three trains per day running between Chicago and Beloit; freight service followed later that year primarily using UPR cars destined for mines in Michigan City or Superior。 By 1912 USR merged with Erie Railway Company providing continuing passenger service between Chicago-Milwaukee/St Paul-Chicago then direct connection to points northeast including Duluth/Erie via Gary/Batavia SEP services were discontinued.. In 1916 USR merged into Pennsylvania Railroad Company which continued passenger service until 1920.. In 1924 USR leased Indiana Gas & Electric Corporation serving as their eastern terminus until 1956 when IGE closed operations.. On April 3rd 1969 Amtrak took over all passenger train traffic from IGE... Amtrak now provides daily commuter rail service between various stations within Greater Milwaukee Area
