Fitchburg, Wisconsin, is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Green Bay metropolitan area and is part of the Wausau–Eau Claire metropolitan area. The first scopes in Fitchburg were built by John Herschel in 1838 and 1840. A few years later, Samuel Conklin opened his own shop, which became known as the "Conklin Scopes". In 1852, James McDonnell bought the business from Conklin and built a new building on Main Street that remains today as McDonnell's Camera Shop. The scopes here continued to be made by hand until about 1865 when they were automated with an electronic scope telescope design developed by Elisha Gray and Sons of Philadelphia. In 1912-13, Michael Jahnke installed an automatic scope telescope at his shop on West State Street that continues to be used today as the Jahnke Museum Scope Tower (the only one of its kind in America). In 1925-26, Alfred Wegener began working at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine developing animal models for research with departmental colleagues including Wilhelm Kuhnemann and Robert Lighthizer who would go on to found NIH in 1938. Alfred Wegener also constructed a large observatory next door to his home called Camping World Observatory which he used for observations during World War II before selling it to UW faculty member Professor George Peake who renamed it Mount Wilson Observatory in 1948 after United States astronomer George Washington Mount (1785-1865). Mount Wilson Observatory was acquired by NASA Ames Research Center in 1965 and currently houses two large telescopes: one using adaptive optics technology called HARPS 1A which was launched on July 12th 2006; while another using Astrophysics Data System(ADS) spectroscopy called HARPS 3D has just been completed! Today there are over 100 amateur scopes operating around Fitchburg including many operated by students at local high schools like Rice Lake High School where I am teaching this semester!

Wisconsin scopes history can be traced back to 1847 when a group of Fitchburg businessmen, led by Captain Samuel Morse, founded the American Scopic Society. The society was devoted to the advancement of optics and astronomy. In 1875, the society changed its name to the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences and Arts, in honor of Governor Abraham Lincoln. In 1928, the academy merged with the University of Wisconsin–Madison and became known as UW–Madison.
Fitchburg is a small town in the western portion of the state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,374 at the 2010 census. Fitchburg is located on the eastern border of Green Bay and is bordered to the north by Menominee County and to the east by Chequamegon County. Fitchburg was platted in 1836, when John P. Fitch became the first settler in what would become Fitchburg. At that time, it was known as "The Village". In 1840, a post office called "Fitzburgh" was established in honor of John P. Fitch's father-in-law, George Fitzsimmons. The name "Fitzburgh" stuck and has been used ever since. In 1854, Samuel Morse built a school on land donated by his wife Lucy Morse; this school served until 1886 when it burned down. The first store in what would become Fitchburg opened in 1856; this store was operated by Wm Burtner for about 10 years before he sold it to Ainslie Dixon who operated it until 1870. In 1870, Ainslie Dixon donated land to build a courthouse which served as the town hall until 1905 when an addition was built which served as the current courthouse building (now part of Green Bay City Hall). From 1906 through 1968, local newspapers were published from a building on Main Street which also housed our high school from 1951-1968 before being moved across town to First United Methodist Church (now Redeemer Lutheran) where they remain today! In 1907, two brothers named Alfred and Clarence Nelsen purchased property along Center Street between High Street and Maple Avenue; this property eventually became known as Nelsen's Grove which service still operates today as an apartment complex with grocery/diner options inside and outside units including a tennis court! In 1925–1926, four businesses were added onto Center Street: Lumber Yard restaurant (later demolished), China Barn (which later became Goodyear Tire & Rubber), Grains Train Shop (later demolished), and Hardware Store Number One (which still stands today). This stretch of Center Street now offers several shopping opportunities such as hardware stores Sam’s Club (#1) along with several restaurants including Starbucks Coffee (#2) . Another development that took place during these years was Addison Park which developed adjacent to Lumber Yard restaurant on High Street between North Ave./Wisconsin Ave.–and 2nd St.–It contained several large playgrounds (.pdf file)
