Fitchburg is a town in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. Fitchburg is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. It is bordered to the south by Racine and to the north by Sheboygan. Fitchburg began as a small community on the east side of Sheboygan River near what is now Waukesha Avenue. The first store in town was built in 1881 by John A. Fitch and his brother-in-law, Salmon Payson. In 1886, Samuel Doherty opened a general store on Main Street which became one of the most important businesses in town until it closed in 1963. From 1907 to 1913, Fitchburg had its own school district and from 1919 to 1971 it belonged to Racine County Schools. In 1969, the Town Board decided that it would no longer be necessary for each individual village or township within Racine County to levy an income tax because all residents were required to pay countywide taxes regardless of whether they resided in village or township status. This change made Fitchburg one of only two townships (the other being Roscoe) within Racine County that never levied an income tax since its incorporation as a Village in 1908; however, all residents within those townships are still required to pay state and federal taxes regardless of their residency status. On July 1, 2009, voters passed a referendum authorizing annexation into Milwaukee County due to concerns about lack of affordable housing options available outside of downtown Milwaukee and throughout Fox Point neighborhoods within boundaries thereof.[2] As part of this annexation process many properties including homes located near Interstate 94 were sold off with plans for them eventually being demolished as part of the annexation process but some have since been reoccupied with new investors while others have yet to take occupancy[3]. On December 3rd 2013 vote sent controversial measure through city council allowing for zoning changes allowing increased development along I-94 corridor creating doubt about future use or redevelopment potential[4][5] Although initial reactions from many seem positive there has been increasing opposition from locals who feel their community will be lost without their local shopping center/strip mall close by

Fitchburg was founded in 1824 by George Fitch and his wife, Maria. The town was named for John Fitch, an early settler. The first building in the town was a log cabin. In 1830, the first post office was established in the town. By 1834, there were six stores and two churches in the town. In 1835, the first school was opened in Fitchburg. A smallpox epidemic struck the town in 1840, and due to it all of the businesses closed their doors for a week while they healed up. In 1841-1842, Anna Pritzker built a sawmill on the north side of River Raisin which became one of Fitchburg's most important businesses until it shuttered in 1886 after years of decline. The mill produced woodchips that were used to make paper products such as hats and envelopes from until 1965 when it stopped production completely due to overcapacity at other mills within Wisconsin Rapids County. The community experienced another resurgence starting around 1990s with its own mall called "The Town Mall" which included several hundred jobs creating new life for downtown Fitchburg However during recent years Downtown business have been struggling as well with little hope for revival anytime soon
