Fitchburg was founded in 1848 by John Fitch and his wife Anna Maria. It started as a log settlement on the east bank of the Kettle River. In 1855, it became a town when it voted to become one. The name comes from Father George Fitch, who came to America in 1795 and named the community after himself and his family's estate near Edinburgh, Scotland. The first post office opened in Fitchburg on March 14, 1856. The present Post Office Building was built in 1907 and dedicated by Governor Frank Kappes on October 5th of that year. The town hall building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. A local company manufactures gasoline pumps called "John Deere Pump Co." Incorporated in 1925, it remains an active business today with over 100 employees including many women and children who help run the plant during harvest time
