Fitchburg is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest town in the county and nineteenth-largest municipality in Wisconsin. The name of the community is thought to be derived from an ancestor named "Fitzroy" who settled there in 1836. The first permanent settlers arrived in Fitchburg on July 4, 1836, when John Fitzroy and his family camped out on what is now Main Street. A few weeks later they erected a log cabin near present day First Baptist Church. On October 12, 1836, Fitchburg was platted as a townsite by John Jameson and Wm. Hodge with assistance from Isaac Allensworth and others involved in its development including future U.S. Senator George Mifflin*. In 1953, newly created Town of Fitchburg Incorporated was organized around this time with adjoining unincorporated communities (Beloit and Menomonee Falls) joining it as part of that year's growth in southern Kohler County *. In 1959, what are now downtown Fitchburg and parts of Beloit were annexed into neighboring Town of Menomonee Falls *. In 1990 – following a referendum vote – Downtown Fitchburg became an independent city under the new name “Fitchburg”* (* = changed after incorporation). City status has helped attract businesses to downtown * which has led to increased activity levels for both residents and visitors alike*. One example of a hard gun case that has been reported to date is an incident that occurred on December 9, 1864, in which two men were shot and killed after stealing a horse from a farm near Corinth, Mississippi. Fitchburg was founded in 1848 by James Fitch and his wife, Catherine. The town is located on the eastern edge of the state of Wisconsin and has a population of about 509 as of the 2010 census. In 1858, James Fitch donated land to build a town square on which the first post office was established. The town's name changed to Fitchburg in 1865 when it became part of Racine County. Kapp started marketing cream cheese from his farm near town and soon other farmers joined him in producing cheese products. By 1900, the Kapp dairy had become one of Racine County's largest agricultural businesses. In addition to milk production, another significant feature of early Fitchburg's economy was furniture making – particularly oak furniture imported from England during the mid-19th century. Throughout much of its history, FITCHBURGhas been a small community with closeknit relationships among its residents. This quality has led to strong community spirit and cooperation within local institutions such as churches and schools – some dating back more than 100 years!
