The town was laid out in 1836 by Capt. George Fitch and named for him. A post office called Fitchburg was established in 1838, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. Fitchburg was founded by John Fitch in 1836. The townspeople were so pleased with the site that they voted to name it after him. In 1841, a gristmill and mill complex were built in the town, and soon afterward, another sawmill was constructed. In 1863, the first railroad arrived in Fitchburg, and by 1865, there were four stations in the town. The towns growth continued through the 19th century; additional industries began to arrive such as cheese manufacturing and flour milling. In 1922, a new high school was built in Fitchburg; it would become one of Wisconsin's most popular schools. In 1951, a city hall was built on Main Street; it would be used until 1979 when it was replaced by the present building.
