It became operational on November 9, 1851 and manufactured shotguns with three types: centerfire, percussion caps (caps that made a loud noise when they blew), and lever-action rifles. The company produced over 1,500 shotguns during its existence which are now part of the inventory at the museum.

The town was founded by John Fitch and named for his father's birthplace, Fitchburg, Virginia. The first post office in Fitchburg was established on July 5, 1854. The name of the town was changed to Fitchburg in 1892 when it became part of the new Dakota Territory. In 1912, the town annexed the village of East Troy and renamed it Fitchburg Village. On April 14, 1916, the towns of West Allis and South Beloit merged into Fitchburg to form a new city with a population of 10,000 people

Fitchburg is a town in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 8,758 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Fitchburg Heights and Fitchburg Township districts of Milwaukee County. Fitchburg was founded in 1854 by George Washington Fitch and his family as a small community on the east side of what is now Milwaukee County. In 1876, when it became a town, it had a population of only 100 people. By 1920, its population had grown to 1,000 people and it increased to 3,000 by 1940. The town's growth continued until the early 2000s when its population decreased by 10%. The first post office in Fitchburg was established on December 12, 1853, with Wm. Jovanovich as mailer. The present building was built in 1907 and has been used as a local government center since then. In 1951, the United States Postal Service merged with United Express to form American Mail Corporation (AMC). In 1971/1972 AMC changed its name to USA Today Publications Inc., which remains America's largest daily newspaper publisher today with over 350 papers throughout North America including 20 in Chicago Tribune territory alone John Akerlund served as mayor from 1974-1979 and 1984-1988; John Lamberth served from 1989-1993; Dick DeVos III succeeded John Akerlund as mayor on November 3rd 1993 after serving two terms as deputy mayor under former Mayor Dick DeVos II In 2002–2003 residents approved an ordinance that allows for marijuana smoking outdoors without permit or risk thereof being enforced
Fitchburg, Wisconsin was founded as a village in 1848. The town was named for Colonel George Fitch, who donated land to the village. The first post office in Fitchburg opened in 1851. In 1870, the Village of Fitchburg became a city and the name changed to Milwaukee.
