The first settler in what is now Fitchburg was Samuel Fitch and his family in 1837. In 1840, Daniel Webster moved from Trumbull County to Green Lake County and claimed some land near where Fitchburg now stands. He named his new settlement after William H. In 1845, Elijah Prentice built a log cabin on a hillock overlooking downtown Fitchburg while surveyors were mapping out the community's boundaries. A year later, he erected a stone building (later known as the Masonic Temple) within Commercial Street Cemetery for sale to residents of what would become Fitchburg proper. The first school in what is now FITCHBURG was founded in 1850 by Reverend Elisha Goode and other teachers who took up residence in two tents set up on Meeting House Square during Lent term; this school served children until February 1862 when an addition to School District #1 moved into its present location on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets). In 1865 Wm Winchester bought property east of First Street from Amos Knapp for $2 per acre which formed what is today Park Avenue East side of town limits; this property became known as Winchester Heights after Winchester donated it to town trustees for use as a parkland setting backslope onto Green Lake Boulevard east of Second Street). A post office called "Finchburgh" was established at present day First Street and Center Road southeast corner with River Road (now US Highway 948) in 1865; it remained open until 1898 when it was merged into Green Lake City post office (which continued operation until 1954). In 1868 John Tilton opened a grist mill northwest of town center onriver road west of Main Street; this mill continued operation until 1903 when it burned down due to lack of maintenance funds (). Fitchburg is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Fitchburg County. The population was 508 at the 2010 census, down from 523 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in what is now Fitchburg was John Greenough, who settled in 1794 on land that he purchased from the Ojibwa nation. He named his new community after his friend and mentor, Washington Irving, who also lived in nearby Waukesha County at that time. In 1838, George Hennepin established a branch railroad west of Fitchburg through town to serve farmers near Rock Island Lake; this made possible easy access by goods and passengers to markets in Illinois and Iowa City. By 1870, railroads had developed throughout Wisconsin and most small towns had them; Fitchburg's only connection with larger areas was via stagecoach services to Chicago or points east for consumers including merchants along Highway 41 (the present-day Interstate 94). Fitchburg experienced rapid growth during World War II as many servicemen came home from overseas; the city's population reached 1,500 by 1945. However, since then it has slowly declined as manufacturing jobs have been lost in other parts ofWisconsin while suburban development has taken over downtown areas around State Street and University Avenue. In recent years there have been efforts to revitalize downtown with art galleries, restaurants and nightlife options; however these plans have not yet borne fruit.
